Quizzes, creative research, problem-solving skills: the third edition of the environment-focused quiz, called “Cívis Dream”, was launched this year. The competition aims to make the projects of the 14 secondary school groups an inspiring example for their peers and the city community. Speaking at the event, Deputy Mayor Ákos Balázs stressed that he believes in active environmental protection and that the people of Debrecen know what they want and are willing to work for it.
“Global Gangsters”, “Ecoteam”, “Green Frogs”, Debrecen students competing under these creative team names of the “CívisDream” competition are testing their skills for a greener and more sustainable future for Debrecen. The students of Medgyessy Ferenc Secondary School, Art Secondary School and Technical School have been victorious for two years now, and they hope to overcome the obstacles this year as well.
“I would actually make this a compulsory competition for all secondary school students. This year, the main goal would obviously be to reach the finals, but beyond that, we would like to achieve a podium finish,” Dániel Czapák said.
According to the young people, the team competitions are a great bonding experience and a real community experience.
“It’s much better than a solo competition, I much prefer to come to a competition that four of us do at the same time than to do it alone. For example, you can share what you have to learn,” Levente Nimród Huszanyik explained.
Debrecen launched the Municipal Talent Development Programme in 2005. The competition encourages creative thinking and cooperative research among secondary school students.
“The students gain a lot of experience and material knowledge, and their presentation, performance and communication skills are also enriched,” Head of the Municipal Talent Development Programme, Viktória Borbélyné Bacsó said.
This is the third edition of the interactive quiz of “Cívis Dream”, this time 56 students from 14 secondary schools took part. In addition to the 8 schools of the Debrecen School District, 6 teams from the Vocational Training Centre entered. The innovation was initiated by the Director of the School District, László Türk.
“It is an opportunity for students to have a say in the development of the city and to present their ideas. The Director thought that this should not just be a competition for the schools of the school district, but for the whole city,” the Professional Manager of the Debrecen School District Centre Andrásné Vántus said.
Reflecting on his own years at secondary school, Deputy Mayor Ákos Balázs highlighted it was important for young people to feel that adults were interested in their opinions and that they had the opportunity to voice their ideas.
“These young people who are here today have a lot of thoughts and ideas, and it’s good if we can take these ideas and incorporate them into the functioning of the city. I think that we will live in the next decades in a city that these young people have in mind for Debrecen, “ he stressed.
On Tuesday, the teams wrote a 100-minute test, prepared by members of the Future of Debrecen Association. In the second and third rounds, secondary school students will have to develop project topics and present them to a jury.
