The building won the BIG SEE Opening Perspectives 2025 international competition in the Educational Buildings category. The National Manufacturing-Research-Education Central Plant and Faculty Building came first in terms of innovation, intelligent design, originality, environmental sensitivity, sustainability, cultural and social awareness, and functionality.

The formerly scattered Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Debrecen was inaugurated last May in the Science, Technology and Innovation Park in Vezér Street.

“The 6,700-square-meter National Manufacturing-Research-Education Central Plant and Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, designed by Pyxis Nautica Architecture Firm and built at a cost of 12 billion forints, was designed by László V. Monori, Tamás Tótszabó and Dávid Tóth. In addition to education, the building is suitable for pharmaceutical research and production,” as summarised by unideb.hu.

The educational wing of the T-shaped facility is three-story. On the ground floor, there are two lecture halls, each capable of accommodating a hundred people, an atrium and offices. On the upper floors, laboratories, classrooms, a library and a simulation plant serving research and education purposes have been established. The Dean’s Office of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, several departments and the Institute of Health Industry are located here.

The central plant belonging to the building is suitable for both pharmaceutical and product development, but health industry research is also carried out.

The laboratory offers the opportunity to research, develop, innovate and even manufacture registrable pharmaceutical products.

“In the center, we not only implement the university’s own projects, but also provide research and manufacturing opportunities for industrial partners who have joined the health industry cluster created by the institution, in a unique way in our country,” Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Debrecen,   Ildikó Bácskay explained.

The open educational wing contrasts with the closed, box-like mass of the production unit. The industrial part of the building is architecturally similar to the surrounding anthracite-clad industrial halls, while the education wing is a more sophisticated, detailed building that is linked to the complex.

The new headquarters of the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Debrecen was the winner of the BIG SEE Opening Perspectives 2025 international architectural competition in the category Educational Buildings.

The jury of architects judged the projects on the basis of innovation, intelligent design, originality, environmental sensitivity, sustainability, cultural and social awareness and functionality.
