This year, around 2,000 new students from other countries will join the university, and in total, almost 7,500 foreign students will start their studies at the institution from September.

“The university is known for having the largest number of foreign students among Hungarian higher education institutions. The student community from more than a hundred countries around the world is a sign of the international recognition and popularity of the University of Debrecen. We offer English-language courses in more than eighty degree programmes for students from abroad. This year’s admission procedure has continued the positive trend of previous years in terms of the number of applicants and admissions, with the number of foreign students expected to exceed seven and a half thousand from September. An important element of the University’s strategy is to strengthen its international image in teaching and research, “ Vice Rector for Education Elek Bartha said.

For the academic year 2024/25, more than 31 thousand students have applied for the courses offered by the University of Debrecen.

The high number of applications was also due to the fact that this year’s figures for the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship programme exceeded the record number of applications in 2023 by more than 15 percent.

“Out of the 50,000 people who contacted us, we received around 3,000 more applications than last year, a total of 26,860 applications, which is nearly 40 percent of national applications.. Following the decision of the Board of Trustees of the Tempus Public Foundation, 753 students, about 16 percent of the national quota, won the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship this year, so including those who are enrolled in fee-paying courses, approximately 2,000 students who accepted the admission decision will start their studies at the University of Debrecen in September,” Director of the Coordinating Centre for International Education Attila Jenei said.

The number of applications for the University of Debrecen’s fee-paying courses increased by 22 percent compared to last year, with 3,828 applications, and the Coordinating Centre for International Education conducted a total of 7,500 admissions procedures for this academic year, of which 4,814 applicants were admitted to the university.

In the 2024/25 academic year, the number of students participating in fee-based training will increase by 2-3 percent compared to last year, thus more than ever before, almost 7,500 foreign students can study in a foreign language at the University of Debrecen.
