The University of Debrecen was also assessed against the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
In its latest Impact Ranking 2023, Times Higher Education (THE) examined the social and economic engagement and impact of 1,591 higher education institutions in 112 countries in 17 categories along the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The University of Debrecen was ranked in 6 categories and was ranked 301-400th overall as the best Hungarian university.
The University of Debrecen was the best Hungarian university in the Partnership for Goals category, moving up from 201-300th place last year to 99th. This category assessed education, research and social engagement activities related to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The institution also improved its ranking in the category of Decent Work and Economic Growth, which examines universities’ research on economic issues and access to apprenticeships and internships, where it was ranked 101-200.
The University of Debrecen is also among the top performers, ranking 201-300 in the Life Under Water category. Here, research related to the topic, education and science related to aquatic ecosystems, disposal of hazardous waste in water and maintenance of local aquatic ecosystems were assessed.
The Good Health and Wellbeing category looked at the number and proportion of students enrolled in health education as a percentage of the total student population, health research, industry collaborations and infrastructure related to healthy lifestyles, while the Sustainable Cities and Communities category looked at institutions’ research on sustainability and efforts to preserve and make available cultural heritage to local communities. In both categories, the University of Debrecen was ranked 301-400.
THE 2023 overall ranking is led by Western Sydney University in Australia, followed by the University of Manchester in the UK and Queen’s University in Canada.
In addition to the University of Debrecen, Eötvös Loránd University, the Hungarian University of Agricultural and Life Sciences, the University of Szeged, the University of Pécs and Semmelweis University were also listed in the ranking.
