The University of Debrecen has moved from 372nd to 313th among the institutions examined by the renowned British ranking agency Quacquarelli Symonds, making it the best Hungarian university.
In the QS World University Rankings Sustainability 2025 list published on Tuesday. QS ranked 1,744 higher education institutions from 107 countries, including 563 from Europe and twelve Hungarian universities.
During the evaluation, QS examined universities’ performance using metrics organised into three categories, ranking higher education institutions based on environmental and social impacts and university operations.
Of the three examined criteria, the University of Debrecen achieved the best result in university operations, ranking 186th. However, in sustainability, which falls under the environmental impacts category, the University of Debrecen is already in the top four percent of the institutions examined, ranking 64th.
The university improved its positions in all three categories compared to the previous year’s results. It has made significant progress in knowledge transfer, employability, and education.
QS assessed institutions across more than fifty segments within the categories. They looked at whether the institution had a research centre dedicated to sustainable development, whether it recorded its annual energy consumption, whether the university prioritised minimizing its impact on climate change in its daily operations, and whether it had research collaborations with companies on the Forbes 2000 list. The ranking also focused on the institution’s ethical culture, climate protection strategy, and gender equality plan.
