“The University of Debrecen has signed a research, innovation and technology cooperation agreement with Tsinghua University. The partnership between the two institutions covers the fields of medicine, therapeutic procedures, drug and food development, and artificial intelligence-based research and development, among others, and the document was signed at the University of Debrecen,” https://unideb.hu/ reported.

As part of this, the University of Debrecen held a mini-symposium with researchers and academic partners from Tsinghua University, a global leader in university rankings, to showcase the latest advances in technology transfer and cutting-edge innovative solutions in science. At the forum, the Chinese guests were given a detailed insight into several Debrecen research projects, including R&D processes for pharmaceuticals, dietary supplements and functional foods, as well as the application of artificial intelligence in innovative drug discovery and food processes.

The Interdisciplinary Research Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM-X) at Tsinghua University in Beijing has made significant achievements in AI-based research and development of traditional Chinese and modern medicines. At the symposium, Dr. Zhang Bo, a research physician representing the institute, presented the UNIQ system developed by Li Shao, an academician of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, which can be effectively applied to interdisciplinary research in traditional Chinese medicine and translational research in the fields of drugs, food and products.

Regarding the cooperation between the two institutions, Rector Zoltán Szilvássy recalled the milestones of the past period.

Our institution has recently become a full member of the University Network For Research Collaboration, the “One Belt, One Road” initiative, and our close cooperation with three Chinese giants, Eve Power, CATL and Semcorp  have contributed to this.

Another factor determining the future is our relationship with BMW, so an ideal situation has arisen where the University of Debrecen is treated as a partner by both the Chinese international network and the German parties, which is unprecedented in the institution’s almost five hundred-year history. In addition, the cultural link cannot be neglected, as medical science and traditional Chinese medicine provide a uniquely valuable cultural platform for our cooperation,” Rector Zoltán Szilvássy explained.

The university leader added that the Faculty of Pharmacy, General Medicine and Health Sciences, as well as the Clinical Center, form a significant health industry and scientific powerhouse, which, combined with Tsinghua University’s researchers and achievements that shape the world’s scientific life, and the network of partner universities of the “One Belt, One Road” Initiative, provides a future-oriented and solid financial foundation for international collaborations.

The cooperation agreement on behalf of Tsinghua University was signed by Yang Pengchong, Head of the Branding Committee of the Urban Management Research Center of Tsinghua University School of Public Administration, Managing Director of Tsinghua Holdings Cultural and Creative (Beijing) Brand Management who expressed his appreciation for the University of Debrecen’s history, health industry aspirations and strategies. He emphasised that Tsinghua University also places great emphasis on interdisciplinarity, with its various departments committed to improving the quality of human life.

“Our aim is to introduce traditional Chinese medicine, food and medicine to Hungarian professionals and to create innovation through cooperation. We are very pleased to have found in Debrecen a university with a deep historical heritage and a strong expertise in medicine and healthcare,” Yang Pengchong said.

Following the mini-symposium, the Beijing delegation also visited the Confucius Institute of the University of Debrecen, which opened in 2019, the Science, Technology and Innovation Park on Vezér Street, the Faculty of Pharmacy, and the Faculty of Agriculture, Food Science and Environmental Management, and discussed cooperation opportunities with rural development experts from the Faculty of Economics.
