Mayor of Debrecen László Papp and Municipal Councillor Tamás Majer reported on the works on the 10th of May 2023 in front of the Auguszta Clinic.

This year, the city will spend around HUF 1.8 billion on large-scale asphalting – three times as much as last year – and more than HUF 200 million on road construction on the initiative of the citizens.

There are several components to this year’s asphalt renovation programme: (1) large-scale asphalting, (2) the construction of roads on the initiative of the citizens with plans and permits already in place, and (3) the design of a road “package” covering 25 streets. The municipality will provide detailed information on the latter later this year and would like to select the contractors for this project in a public procurement procedure.

Mayor of Debrecen László Papp said it was also important for Debrecen’s economy to be strong so that these developments could be carried out at a faster pace and on a larger scale.

The large-scale asphalt works are divided into three parts. The first will be the large-scale asphalting and repair of busy roads, followed by the smaller roads. The first phase will now start on one of the busiest roads in the city, Móricz Zsigmond Road.  This road serves as a health centre and is a link between two other busy roads in the city, Pallagi Road and Dóczy József Street. It was, therefore, absolutely justified to improve Móricz Zsigmond Road at the entrance to the Auguszta Clinic and the Pallagi Road estuary, which is also in a poor state of repair. In addition, sections of the Nagyerdei körút will be renewed, such as the section between the entrance to the Aquaticum Debrecen Strand and the car park on Egyetem Square, as well as the section between Simonyi Road and Martinovics Street.

This year, the city will be able to repair large parts of Nagyerdei körút. Monostorpályi Street will be renovated from Cseresznye Street to the bus roundabout, and Derekassy István and Függetlenség Street will also be renovated.

The first phase of the large-scale asphalt works is scheduled for completion in mid-June, the second phase will take place during the summer and the third phase between September and November. Details of the second and third phases will be provided by the municipality later.

The aim of all road improvements is to make traffic conditions in Debrecen more comfortable, better and safer. The mayor asked all road users to be patient and to respect traffic restrictions.

Municipal councillor Tamás Majer thanked Debrecen for the possibility of starting such large-scale road development works this year.

The city, with the diligence of a good host, is implementing such investments on an increasing scale every year, he said, asking all road users to be patient and to respect traffic restrictions.
