Passenger vehicles will continue to be allowed to use the overpass without restriction, while lorries up to 12 tonnes will be allowed to use the overpass with a 30-metre following distance. Local bus services of DKV Zrt. will operate on a new route from the date of introduction of the restriction. On Friday, 3rd of November 2023, the current weight limit of 20 tonnes will be replaced by a weight limit of 12 tonnes on the section of the road between the junction of Highway 4 and the Lion Office Center on Vágóhíd Street.

The weight limitation will be introduced by the experts of the Hungarian Public Road Nonprofit Zrt. (Magyar Közút Nonprofit Zrt.) on the basis of the results of the regular annual bridge inspection and the expert static target analysis in order to maintain safe traffic. The company’s experts will continue to monitor the condition of the bridge.

Drivers of vehicles affected by the weight restriction are requested to check the restriction with the company’s website at www.utinform.hu before driving. It is also advisable to use a navigation and community car app to plan the optimal route.

The transport function of Vágóhíd Street is of particular importance as it provides a link between the eastern and western parts of the city. The Municipality of Debrecen has already initiated the renovation of Vágóhíd Street and the Vágóhíd Street overpass over railway line 100 at the competent ministry and at the Hungarian Public Road Nonprofit  Ltd. (Magyar Közút Nonprofit Zrt.).

For a long time, the Municipality of Debrecen has been using all possible means to create opportunities for the renovation of the overpass and has continuously expressed its strong demand for the necessary renovation works on the state-owned bridge. As a result of this, the Ministry of Construction and Transport (as the contractor), with the support of the Government, is planning to upgrade the Debrecen-Nyíregyháza railway line No. 100 and related facilities, including the Vágóhíd Street level crossing.

The investment is a priority project for the national economy and the construction permit procedure is being carried out accordingly. The permit plans have been finalised, including the construction of a new 2×1 lane bridge structure next to the Vágóhíd Street overpass, which will carry an undivided pedestrian and cycle path on the northern side of the overpass. The old bridge structure will be demolished once the new one is completed.

On the basis of Government Decision No. 1300/2023 (VII.19.) on road infrastructure development for access to Debrecen’s economic zones, the Ministry of Construction and Transport has launched a public procurement procedure for the preparation of the development of Debrecen Road No. 4814, the bridge over the railway over Vágóhíd Street and the related road network, including the preparation of the design. This will include the preparation of a study design, a road safety impact assessment and the necessary environmental protection works. This essentially involves the preparation and capacity increase of the 2×2 lane 2×2 lane bridge structure on Vágóhíd Street. An additional 2×1 lane bridge structure would be built next to the newly constructed bridge, thus ensuring the future 2×2 lane 2×2 lane along the entire length of Vágóhíd Street.
