Wizz Air is launching a new twice-weekly scheduled flight from Debrecen to Rome, the capital of Italy, from the 13th of December, Mayor of Debrecen László Papp announced on his Facebook page.
Wizz Air’s booking system has already published the flight, which will fly to Rome Fiumicino Airport (also known as Leonardo da Vinci International Airport). This airport is located 32 km southwest of Rome city centre. Rome is the capital of Italy and the third most populous city in the European Union, with 2.8 million inhabitants. The Vatican, the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church, is located just outside the city. The centre of Rome is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is home to some of the most beautiful monuments of the ancient world and Christianity, such as the Colosseum, the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel, St Peter’s Basilica, the Trevi Fountain, Villa Medici, the Circus Maximus and the Pantheon.
“Rome will be a long-awaited destination for many people in Wizz Air’s Debrecen portfolio from December, so we are particularly pleased to announce this new flight today. At the beginning of the year, we set a target of 250,000 passengers by 2023, which I believe will be greatly helped by the previously announced flights to Hurghada and Rome,” Tamás Király, CEO of Debrecen International Airport Kft., said.
Wizz Air currently operates three seasonal summer flights from Debrecen to Antalya in Turkey, Corfu in Greece and Burgas in Bulgaria until October. All three flights will be available in next year’s timetable. Next month, Wizz Air will also launch a new flight to Egypt from Debrecen. The first flight to Hurghada will take off on 29th October. According to the current schedule, the flights will operate until 27th March.
Wizz Air also flies to Tel Aviv, Larnaca in Cyprus (which has not been a holiday destination for some time, but operates all year round), London and Eindhoven from Debrecen, and Lufthansa to Munich.
Recently, the Public Transport Authority under the Ministry of Construction and Transport announced that it has received an application for unused air traffic rights under the bilateral air services agreement between Hungary and Turkey for the Debrecen – Istanbul route for passenger operations. It has not yet been disclosed which airline has submitted the application.
