This year’s top wines have been unveiled, and it has been decided which wines will be awarded the title of Wine of the City of Debrecen in 2024. The professional jury selected the best wines in seven categories. The winning wines will carry the title for one year.
Flavour, colour, texture and aroma were the main criteria used to judge the shortlisted wines for the city wine title. The 18-strong professional jury had to choose from around 500 different wines, ranked according to the international 100-point scoring system.
“We have been making traditional sparkling wines for 25 years, and we are known by the trade and the general public primarily for our sparkling wines. And now we have managed to win this honorary title with a large-format, full-bodied, elegant red wine, ” Commercial Director of Garamvári Vineyard Miklós Gáspár said.
The title is awarded for a full range of wines, with top wines selected in seven categories: classic white and red, rosé, premium white and red, sparkling and dessert wines. The competition, which has a long tradition going back to decades, has so far attracted 19 of the country’s 22 wine regions across the country.
“If you think that the selection of the Wine of the City of Debrecen is the result of a single wine tasting, you are very much mistaken. It is the result of a year’s work,” a full member of the Hungarian Wine Academy Pál Kovács said.
Főnix Event Organizing Non-profit Ltd., in cooperation with the Debrecen Wine Cellar Magazine, has been selecting the beverages that deserve the title of the Wine of Debrecen for 10 years, the wines selected are also featured at the city’s gastronomic events and festivals.
“By all accounts it was a record in terms of the number of participants, and obviously also in terms of quality. This year, 130 wineries and 500 wines from 21 wine regions took part in the competition, so it was not an easy task for the jury,” Mayor László Papp said.
