The physical activity programmes of the Move, Debrecen! Movement have found a new venue at the Karácsony Sándor Primary School in Debrecen.

Deputy Mayor of Debrecen, Diána Széles, members of the local government István Kovács and Viktor Papp, Director of the Debrecen Institute for Primary Care and Health Development (Daefi) Csaba Papp and Head of the School Zsuzsanna Varga, announced the news at a press conference on the 5th of March 2024. Diána Széles said that the Move Debrecen! school programmes have been running at the Karácsony Sándor School since October last year. This also shows that the school’s maintainer, the Debrecen School District Centre, has supported the Move, Debrecen! Movement, and there is close cooperation. All the more so as local government representatives have repeatedly indicated that residents of their districts are intensely interested in finding out when they will have the opportunity to participate in the Move Debrecen! programmes at locations near them. The simplest and most practical solution is to host the programmes in schools, which have the necessary infrastructure,  gyms, changing rooms. The lively wave of venue expansion in recent days is due to the fact that in the city’s budget adopted at the end of February, the local government was able to support the activities of the Debrecen Institute of Primary Care and Health Promotion (Daefi) and the Debrecen Sports Centre with a total of nearly HUF 200 million, including the infrastructure of the Move Debrecen! Movement. Although the programmes are free of charge for the participants, the employment of qualified instructors to lead the programmes has its costs, and the only way to increase the number of venues and expand the programmes is to have a sufficient number of instructors available.Diána Széles stressed Move, Debrecen! can only work if the local tax revenues of the municipality, from the city’s growing economy, increase significantly, and from this it is possible to implement a number of welfare developments, thus creating the opportunity for the city’s residents to exercise regularly. In the Eastern part of the city, Karácsony Sándor School will now be the hub of this community-building movement open to all. The Deputy Mayor also mentioned that UNICEF also recognizes and supports the health promotion activity taking place in Debrecen, unmatched in Europe and in the world in terms of its professionalism, systematicity and complexity.

Municipal Councillor, István Kovács thanked the promoters of the Move, Debrecen! Movement for bringing the movement programmes to the Eastern part of the city, earlier for children and now for adults as well. The representative also confirmed that since the launch of the Move Debrecen! programme locations in other parts of the city, more and more people have contacted him with messages or in person, asking when such an opportunity will be available near their place of residence.  István Kovács thanked the head of the Karácsony Sándor School for providing the venue for the programmes, the information about which will be widely distributed by the organisers.

Director of the Debrecen Institute of Primary Care and Health Promotion (Daefi) Csaba Papp, highlighted that recently it is becoming clear how the opportunities offered by the Move Debrecen movement are appearing in more and more districts of the city. The special feature of the Karácsony Sándor School as a programme venue, which is the tenth indoor venue of Move, Debrecen!, is that every single weekday there will be an opportunity to move: in line with the rhythm of life in the suburbs, from 5:00 p.m. and afterwards. In the gym of the school (Komáromi Csipkés György Square 9) on Mondays from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., spinal gymnastics, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. yoga, on Tuesdays from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Zumba, on Wednesdays from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. spinal gymnastics, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. body shaping aerobics, parent-child yoga on Thursdays from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., zumba from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and shape-shaping aerobics on Fridays from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Csaba Papp also highlighted that the parent-child yoga sessions can be attended by the whole family. The aerobics sessions are very popular in all locations, and this is expected to be the case here too. That’s why the classes are held twice a week and the gym has a large capacity to accommodate over 100 people at a time.

Municipal councillor Viktor Papp also thanked all the contributors for their help in further expanding the range of programmes of the Move, Debrecen! Movement in the eastern part of the city, as the Csapókerti Community House, which has already grown in this respect, started its activities last spring, with the exception of aerobics and zumba. However, the new venue will also offer the opportunity to practise these movements, so that everyone can find something to suit their needs. According to Viktor Papp, the “Move, Debrecen!” Movement has become a city-wide movement, the residents of the city are happy about it, it is successful, and it is very important that both parents and children get used to everyday physical activity with the help of the movement, and the representative is confident that more and more people will participate in the future.

Head of Karácsony Sándor Primary School in Debrecen, Zsuzsanna Varga is very happy about this cooperation and thanked all the contributors for the opportunity to provide the venue. As she said, she herself is a resident of this part of the city and knows that there is no real exercise for adults after their daily work nearby. That’s why many people are looking forward to the launch of the Move Debrecen! programmes in the school gym from the 6th of March.
