The exhibition also features interesting pieces such as the legendary velocipede, the tricycle, or the masterpieces of Hungarian craftsmanship and two-wheelers made in the Csepel factory giant.
Cycling is one of the healthiest, most environmentally friendly and most efficient ways to get around. It’s no coincidence that its popularity has endured for over 200 years. Now, at the Fórum shopping centre, the exciting history of cycling unfolds before our eyes. The history of two-wheelers dates back to the early 19th century. Start your imaginary journey with Karl von Drais’s 1817 wooden pedal bike and don’t stop until the latest Italian racing bikes.
Collector Attila Katona has loved bicycles since childhood, he got his first two-wheeler at the age of 9-10, then immediately took it apart and modified it. As an adult, thanks to an acquaintance, he got his first vintage bike, which he started to restore to its original condition.
“The machinery started, the bikes kept coming. I wasn’t really looking for them, it was the bike that found me. I now have over 100 bikes that are not only in showroom condition, but can be used on a daily basis. I don’t even like bicycles that I can’t take for a ride when I feel like it,” the Debrecen collector said. He added that he had been following the work of museums, cyclists and collectors at home and abroad, reading a lot about it, and then the goal of creating a bicycle museum began to take shape.
“To show people how it all worked, from 1817, from the first steerable two-wheeler by Karl von Drais, to the everyday and racing bicycles of today. It’s what keeps me alive, it’s what I work on every day, it’s what I get up on in the morning and go to bed on at night. It has become not only my hobby, but also part of my life,” Attila Katona pointed out.
Deputy Mayor István Puskás stated at the opening ceremony that the collection is unique in Hungary. As he said that was not the first exhibition of Attila Katona’s work in the city, but the collection had never been presented in such a large space and in such a comprehensive way before. “From its form to its role in everyday life, the bicycle is present in our lives in a thousand ways, with a thousand small details. There is almost no person who, somehow, at some time, as a small child or in adulthood, has not come into contact with a bicycle,” the Deputy Mayor said.
“The city considers it important and its duty to help those who want to show their treasures, “ he added. As for the important collection of bicycles, he said that they were working on a permanent exhibition space, a kind of bicycle museum, in the very near future.
The exhibition will also include interesting pieces such as the legendary velocipede, the tricycle, and the masterpieces of Hungarian craftsmanship and two-wheelers made in the Csepel factory giant.
The exhibition is open until the 2nd of June at the Fórum shopping centre.
