Debrecen Advent Events 29 November – 1 December

The excitement of Christmas fills the air as the Debrecen Advent Festival kicks off on the 29th of  November in the city’s beating heart. Debrecen Advent brings a festive spirit to the city; the main square is transformed into a magical winter wonderland of Christmas lights!

Debrecen Advent will be hosting the following events this week.

29 November

9.00 a.m. – 12.00 p.m. Kindergartners’ Christmas tree decorations at the Advent Fair

Kindergarten children in Debrecen decorate 24 small pine trees with ornaments they made. The trees will be exhibited at the Adven Fair.

3.00 p.m. – 5.0 p.m. DuoTrio Street theatre at the Advent Fair

The DuoTrio Street Theatre improvises its performances from stories inspired by the audience, with the active participation of the general public. Several performances of their interactive stilt show will be shown at the Advent Fair. The members of the company are Tímea Telenkó-Oláh (Vojtina Puppet Theatre), Máté Kiss Gergely (Csokonai National Theatre), Zsolt Györgyfi (Kodály Philharmonia) and Endre Molnár (Hungarian National Circus).

5.00 p.m. Bordeaux Dragon Concert at Kossuth Square

Bordeaux Dragon band plays what they call “medieval world music”. Set in a medieval atmosphere, their songs are danceable, powerful and dynamic, in keeping with the world music soundscape of today. In addition to their own compositions, they boldly combine Hungarian and European medieval songs and dances with their own creative ideas.

The group has given concerts in 16 foreign countries since its formation. They have performed internationally in Norway, Estonia, France, Spain, Italy, Poland, Germany and other countries. The orchestra has given highly successful concerts at the Hungarian Institutes in Rome, Bucharest and Tallinn, as well as at the Hungarian Institute in Warsaw and the Consulate in Riga.

The ensemble has also played at major venues and festivals in Hungary.

6.30 p.m. Christmas concert by Kitti Péter, Adél Lieli and Marcell Horváth at Kossuth Square

The trio of Péter Kitti (vocals), Adél Lieli (saxophone) and Marcell Horváth (piano) will perform the most beautiful Christmas songs in acoustic arrangements, pop and jazz style. Their concert will take place on the opening day of Advent Fair  and will feature well-known melodies in a fresh and intimate atmosphere.

30 November

3.00 p.m. – 5.0 p.m. DuoTrio Street theatre at the Advent Fair

4.00 p.m. – 5.00 p.m. Show of LESZ DANCE Dance and Sport Association at the Advent Fair

During the Advent weekends, the fair’s audience can meet the elves of LESZ DANCE Dance and Sports Association, Santa’s daughters and one of the children’s favorite fairy tale characters, Elsa.

5.00 p.m. Concert of Szironta Ensemble at Kossuth Square

The Szironta Ensemble, a prominent bell orchestra in Hungary, has been playing American bells, handbells, handchimes, and cymbals since 2016. With over 100 handbells, they can play a wide range of music, including classical, contemporary, popular, film scores, and Christmas tunes. The ensemble aims to promote and popularize bell music in Hungary and Central Europe, performing in Europe, the US, and South America. They have performed at various events, including castles, ballrooms, churches, and Parliament buildings.

6.30 p.m. Concert of Viki Békefi and Feng Ya Ou at Kossuth Square

The actress-singer Viki Békefi, blessed with a charming personality and a wonderful voice, and the charming performer Feng Ya Ou found each other in 2019 in the TV production “I’ll be a Star in Star!” There are few musical couples who are in perfect harmony on stage and in their private lives. They began working together during the quarantine period, when they produced a series of singles on a variety of exciting themes that were loved by fans and attracted hundreds of thousands of views. Alongside the medleys, their own collaborative songs have been released in succession. Their duet “Waiting for me” is a very special song in the couple’s life, as it heralds the arrival of their baby girl. Viki and Feng’s Advent show will feature their own songs and well-known covers.

8.30 p.m. – 10.0 p.m. Skate Disco at Kossuth Square ice rink

1 December 

3.00 p.m. East 4 Brass Concert at Dósa nádor Square

The ensemble of four musicians is made up of professional musicians who share a common vision of their profession, the brass performance art.Their performances are an experience for music lovers and audiences alike. Their repertoire includes a wide range of arrangements, with a focus on well-known Christmas tunes during the Advent season.

The embers of the band are István Bócz trumpet, Péter Bócz tuba, János Durkó trombone.

4.00 p.m. Advent music by artists of the Csokonai Theatre Zsuzsa Lehőcz and Dániel Takács at Kossuth Square

Hungarian Christmas folk songs and church music will be performed by Zsuzsa Lehőcz and Dániel Takács. The audience will hear beautiful, old, rarely played melodies as well as songs that everyone will be happy to sing.

4.30 p.m. – 6.00 p.m. 1st Candle Lighting at the Advent Fair

6.30 p.m. Concert of Orpheum Madams Orchestra at Kossuth Square

The Orpheum Madams Orchestra from Nyíregyháza will be performing on 1 December, after the first candle lighting. The two singers and the five-piece orchestra will perform the best-known Christmas songs in the style of the swing era.

1 December – 6 January 

From Advent to Epiphany, El Greco’s work “The Annunciation” will be on display at the Déri Museum.
