Debrecen Advent Events – 2-8 December

The joy of Christmas pervades the city’s pulsating heart. Debrecen Advent provides a festive feeling to the city, with the main square turned into a stunning winter paradise of Christmas lights!

Please find below the events and various programmes Debrecen Advent will be hosting  this week.

5 December

5.00 p.m. “Eszter-Lánc” Fairy Tale Band at Kossuth Square

“Eszter-Lánc” Fairy Tale Band  invites all children and child-loving adults to a winter concert in a fairytale world, where they will search for Santa Claus through music. The songs, sounds and instruments all become characters in a fairy tale, whose adventures children can shape with their ideas. Eszter Kárász and the “Eszterlánc” Fairy Tale Band will welcome families to the Debrecen Advent with an interactive show entitled “Where is Santa Claus?”, during which Santa Claus will arrive if the children sing loudly enough.

6 December

5.00 p.m. Concert of Éva Bolba and the JAZZterlánc at Kossuth Square

The songs of the trio are performed by Éva Bolba (vocals, music, lyrics), Zsolt Bera Kossuth Prize-winning artist (trombone) and Miklós Birta (guitar). In this fun, interactive concert, they will engage the audience and show off their instruments to make their performance more exciting. For 10 years now, the band has been making it their goal to introduce the genre of jazz to preschool and school-age children through their songs.The Orchestra’s previous shows have been well received in Slovakia, Germany, Austria, England and the USA. Our 2006 album has been nominated for a Fonogram Award.

6.10 p.m. – 6.25. p.m. Performance of Debrecen Majorette Ensemble  at Kossuth Square

The Debrecen Majorette Ensemble, founded 44 years ago, is the country’s largest majorette ensemble, currently with 16 groups of girls aged between 3 and 25. They have won numerous national competitions and have been a leading group at Debrecen Flower Carnival since 1981. On the 6th of December they will perform Christmas music at the city’s Christmas tree.

7 December 

10.00 a.m. – 12.30 p.m. Ugly Sweater Run at  Baltazár Dezső Square

For the fourth time, Debrecen will host theUgly Sweater Run where charity goes hand in hand with the joy of movement and a great atmosphere. Participants will run 3.5 km and 1 km through the beautiful Advent Fair downtown Debrecen.

All participants have to do is get out their cutest or funniest Christmas sweater, hat, scarf and bring their donations.

The aim of the charity run is to promote community sport and to make Christmas brighter for disadvantaged families and children in Debrecen and its surrounding area. Donations of fruit, non-perishable food with a minimum six-month expiry date and chocolate can be made at the donation point of the Ugly Sweater Run Baltazár Dezső Square on the 7th of  December between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. The donations will be distributed to the families through the staff of the Debrecen Charity Board.

10.00 a.m. – 4.45 p.m. Bethlehem Festival in Debrecen at Kossuth Square and DEMKI

The tradition of the Debrecen Bethlehem Festival will be held again this year. The 14 groups coming from all over the world will be hosted by the DEMKI institutions – DEMKI Youth House, DEMKI Homokkert Community House, DEMKI Csapókert Community House.

The opening ceremony will start at 10:00 a.m. on the stage in the yard of the DEMKI Youth House. This will be followed by performances by the nativity groups, accompanied by other cultural programmes and the Törköly Band.

In addition to the stage programme, the live nativity scene will feature a dwarf goat and bunny petting. In the courtyard, visitors can buy craft products from folk craftsmen and learn about their crafts. There will also be a variety of folk craft activities for young and old alike.

2.30 p.m. Garagulya Stilt Comedy Company at Dósa nádor Square

In the performance of the Garagulya Stilt Comedy Company, folk traditions and beliefs related to the traditional winter holiday cycle, the month of Christmas, are presented in the usual good mood of the company. At the end of the show, the comedians wish the audience a Merry Christmas with a truly world-class performance.

5.0 0 p.m. – 6.00 p.m.  Concert of Debrecen Garrison Orchestra at the Advent Fair

The Debrecen Garrison Orchestra celebrates its 70th anniversary this year who are returning guests of the Debrecen Advent, and this year the audience can listen to their Christmas concert.

6.00 p.m. Concert of Four Fathers Singing Ensemble at Kossuth Square

The Four Fathers Singing Ensemble was formed 29 years ago, and the present formation has been singing in this line-up since 1999. Their repertoire includes American music of the 1920s and 1930s, the “Barbershop Style”, world hits, arrangements of Hungarian hits and spirituals. With an atmospheric, humorous show and more than two thousand performances behind them, they are sure to entertain all ages. Three members of the Four Fathers Singing Ensemble graduated from the University of Debrecen’s Faculty of Music, so it is a special pleasure for them to perform in Debrecen again.

At the Debrecen Advent Fair, they will perform both well-known and lesser-known tunes of the winter holiday season, both foreign and Hungarian popular music. The members of the band are László Batki, Sándor Boros, Zoltán Frech and Gyula Mukli.

8.30 p.m. – 10.0 p.m. Skate Disco at Kossuth Square ice rink

7-8 December 4.00 p.m. – 5.00 p.m. Show of LESZ DANCE Dance and Sport Association at the Advent Fair

During the Advent weekends, the fair’s audience can meet the elves of LESZ DANCE Dance and Sports Association, Santa’s daughters and one of the children’s favorite fairy tale characters, Elsa.

7-8 December – Zsolt Horváth – The Hurdy-Gurdy Player from Füred

Zsolt Horváth has been playing the instrument for years, coaxing romantic, sweet melodies and waltzes out of it.  He will entertain the audience with its Christmas show on two weekends during the Advent fair.

8 December

2.30 p.m. Show of HOPPERS stilt walkers at Dósa nádor Square

HOPPERS stilt walkers, following medieval fair traditions, entertain the public with clowning and juggling acts, accompanied by whistles and drums. They will be waiting for the audience of the Debrecen Advent Fair on December 8th and 15th with their spectacular, creepy and extremely educational show.

4.30 p.m. – 6.00 p.m. 2nd  Candle Lighting at the Advent Fair

Members of the Animus Bells Ensemble have been playing together since 2008. Its members have set themselves the goal of promoting both the genre of bell ringing and the classics of music literature. With a repertoire of over a hundred works, this rich musical material ensures that the right pieces are played for every occasion, from fund-raising balls to church celebrations and Advent concerts, which are a perfect match for the sound.

The Animus Bells Ensemble from Miskolc will create a cosy atmosphere with Christmas melodies at the fair during the second weekend of Advent in Debrecen.

The members are Ildikó Ágoston, Ferenc Czentnár, Ferenc Dézsi, Krisztina Gottner, Zsuzsa Kerekes, Katalin Gávay Kovács, Iván Nagy, Sára Ágota Tóthné Szternai.

3.30 p.m. – 4.00 p.m. György Reschofsky, “Resó’s” Show at Dósa nádor Square

For more than 40 years, Resó has been playing guitar, singing and telling stories to children with puppets at the Vojtina Puppet Theatre. Everywhere he turns, there’s a song, a snap of the fingers and a smile … and of course the sun shines, the wind blows and everyone smiles.  Maybe even a horse-drawn carriage will turn up with its long-awaited passenger, Santa Claus!

György Reschofsky will entertain families at the Advent Fair with his show “The Glass Ball” and a Santa Claus sing-along.

4.00 p.m. – 4.15 p.m. Christmas Show of Dance Universe Dance Sports Association at Kossuth Square

Dance Universe Dance Sport Association has been operating since 2009. Their main profile is teaching competitive and ballroom dancing from preschoolers to the eternal youth. Both couples and formations learn in the genres of Latin-American and standard dances, from beginner level to competition. Their teams and individual competitors have won regional championships and national titles at home and abroad. They have participated in numerous events throughout the country and the association also pays particular attention to charitable activities.

6.00 p.m. Advent Concert of Gabi Völgyesi at Kossuth Square

Gabi Völgyesi will take the stage with guitarist Gábor Jermann. The dedicated goal of the performing artist duo is to re-tune the audience and lead them into an expectant, intimate atmosphere with their concert, focusing on the uplifting feeling of belonging to a loving community.
