In cooperation with Főnix Rendezvényszervező Kft., the city government is hosting more than 9,000 primary school children from Debrecen institutions, of whom nearly 7,600 are participating in the “Move Debrecen!” school programme, for free ice skating at the Kossuth Square ice rink.

As Deputy Mayor Diána Széles said on the spot on 2 December 2024, the programme will run from 26 November to 20 December on weekdays, during school hours, between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m.

It will allow up to 300 children to enjoy skating on the ice rink at a time. Those who don’t have skates will be provided free of charge. The action – mainly in addition to the “Move, Debrecen!” school programme – aims to encourage children to get more involved in physical activity and to get out into the fresh air. There was a similar initiative last Advent but on a smaller scale than this one. It is fair to say that, together with the knock-out tournament, this year’s skating campaign has been a massive success with schools in Debrecen.

In addition to skating, there will be other free activities on Kossuth Square for young and old alike. As mentioned by Zita Dobos, managing director of Főnix Rendezvényszervező Kft., every weekday between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m., groups of children from the 3rd to 4th grade can learn the secrets of making horn cakes. Every weekend until 23 December – on Saturday and Sunday – free craft activities are organised for children in the Advent Cuckoo, where Santa Claus will also visit on 7 and 8 December.

More than a hundred free events are organised by Főnix Rendezvényszervező Kft. at six venues throughout the Advent period.

The Advent Fair – a great treat for the people of Debrecen and everyone else in the city – offers a wide range of activities to enjoy. To expand the choice, restaurants offer a “budget-friendly” meal for just 1500 HUF.
