According to  Szallas.hu, booking site’s announcement on Monday, 66 percent of domestic bookings in the first quarter of 2025 were worth up to HUF 70 thousand, while 27 percent were worth between HUF 70000 and HUF170000. In this period, 26 percent of the total value of online payments were made with SZÉP cards on the site.

The most popular city was Budapest, followed by Eger, Pécs, Szeged and Hévíz. Gyula, Siofok, Miskolc, Hajdúszoboszló and Debrecen also made it into the top ten.

In terms of tourist regions, the North Great Plain and Budapest-Central Danube Region had the highest number of domestic guests, with Lake Balaton coming in third, ahead of the high season.

Among accommodation types, hotels continued to be the most popular, with 41 percent of bookings in the first quarter going to hotels. Apartments accounted for 25 percent of bookings, guesthouses for 17 percent and pensions for 13 percent, while other types of accommodation such as hostels accounted for 4 percent of bookings.

Pre-bookings received for the second quarter suggest that the Lake Balaton region could top the regional popularity list, overtaking the Northern Great Plain, which has been leading for months. Budapest and Eger remain among the most popular destinations, while Siófok has moved up to third place. Balatonfüred, Hévíz, Keszthely and Tapolca are also popular destinations around Lake Balaton.

“A shift in travel habits is also noticeable, with 40 percent of bookings for the second quarter being for two-night stays, 25 percent for three-night stays, while the share of one-night stays has dropped to 24 percent,” Szallas.hu said.
