After storms: the removal of green waste from Debrecen residents has begun
The elimination of last week’s storm damage is still ongoing, which mainly involves the removal and transportation of fallen trees that are causing obstacles. The usual green waste collection in the city is taking place with increased capacity. In the meantime, the city is assessing the reports of flooding received by the municipality one by one, and the city is working with the authorities to develop a new storm warning system.
In the Botanical Garden of the University of Debrecen, an approximately 60-year-old silver maple tree also fell victim to the storm. The fallen tree will be removed in the coming days, but unfortunately this is not the only plant that was destroyed by the hurricane-force wind in the facility.
“I can’t give a final number yet, but about 10-15 trees were completely destroyed and fell, and several others were damaged to a greater or lesser extent,“ director of the Botanical Garden of the University of Debrecen, Attila Takács said.
The storm also caused great damage to other institutions in the city. The wind uprooted trees and ruined flower beds. The guest of the Evening Close-up, the city’s chief gardener András Kuhn, spoke in the studio about replacing the fallen trees and inspecting the remaining ones.
“The remaining trees must also be checked to see if the root system or canopy has suffered any damage that could cause another problem during a later storm. But there may be cracks on them that, if water flows in, could rot, and a large branch could fall in a few years,” he explained.
It is impossible to prepare for a storm of the magnitude that hit Debrecen last week. The city’s mayor has already said this. László Papp added that in the future, the local government will have several tasks to deal with the damage caused by similar storms as soon as possible. For example, they will coordinate with disaster management and public utility companies, but the Debrecen city government is also working on developing a new storm warning system.
“We will take steps to develop a city warning system that will be able to draw attention to the danger based on cell information in the coming period, “ László Papp announced.
The Hungarian Reformed Charity Service Research and Rescue Group also assisted the local government, disaster management, and firefighters in eliminating the damage. In recent days, they have been able to provide assistance to people affected by the storm in more than 100 cases.
“We were able to work at various locations. From removing dangerous branches that endangered human life or the safety of property to cutting down a complete tree that fell on a house. On Friday, we restored the damaged clock of the Great Church, so we worked at quite a variety of locations,” spokesperson for the Research and Rescue Group of the Hungarian Reformed Charity Service, Ilka Kovács, said.
The removal of residential green waste generated after the storm is also a priority task. The majority of this work is carried out by AKSD Kft.
This week, residents can place several bags on the green waste collection day; these do not have to be green bags, and we will also be able to transport smaller branches in bundles of up to about one cubic metre,” spokesperson for AKSD Kft. Csilla Domokos informed.
The local government will take care of the removal of large branches, twigs, and trees that cannot be placed in bags or bundled for two weeks.
