In Debrecen, children are welcomed at 48 sites of 33 municipal kindergartens.

A press conference was held at the Tócóskert Kindergarten Napsugár Member Institution on the 27th of January, 2025, regarding the details of kindergarten enrollment.

“Kindergartens are the arenas of child upbringing and education, which cannot be the sites of any political battles, “ Deputy Mayor Lajos Barcsa referred to the previous week’s events. He said that all threats in this regard must be rejected, as all this is very far from the values of the city of Debrecen.

The Deputy Mayor highlighted that in the recent period, the city of Debrecen has implemented a severe institutional development and kindergarten development programme.

“In Debrecen, 33 kindergartens are maintained by the municipality, and we operate kindergartens in 48 task-based places. According to the latest data, we have 6,872 places that operate with a very good, higher than 80 percent utilisation,” he said. He noted that 1,100 employees, including 560 kindergarten teachers, perform their duties in the city’s kindergartens. He said,” The city has done a lot for the kindergartens in terms of infrastructure in the recent period, and the human resources are also available in their institutions.”

“The development of kindergartens has been part of a comprehensive development program in the past. We have already renovated 19 kindergarten buildings, and here, in Tócóvölgy, we built a completely new kindergarten. In total, we spent more than HUF 5 billion on the renovation of kindergartens, and this kindergarten cost HUF 757 million, so we can say that we spent nearly HUF 6 billion on the infrastructural development of kindergartens,” he emphasised. He noted that, uniquely in the country, 12 children’s football fields have already been built. Speaking about the admission application, he said that it can be submitted to the desired institution on paper or electronically until the 14th of February, 2025.

The Head of the Tócóskerti Kindergarten, Attiláné Csaba Báthory, highlighted that parents can nominate three of the 33 municipal kindergartens, and the application form must be submitted to the kindergarten they nominate first by the 14th of February. She said that a decision on admission or rejection will be made on the 7th of March, and parents will be notified in writing.

She added that kindergarten enrollment will take place on April 29 and 30 at the institution where the child was admitted, but an additional enrollment day will be held on the 7th of May. The head of the institution drew attention to the fact that more kindergartens will hold open days until the application deadline when children and their parents are welcome.

Local Government Representative András Varga said that infrastructural developments had been implemented in both the Tócóskert and Tócóvölgy kindergartens in recent times, which have resulted in increasingly high-quality and child-centred teaching and upbringing work. He also thanked the teachers for their daily dedicated and conscientious work.

Local Government Representative János Sánta highlighted that the recently built Tócóvölgy kindergarten was greatly needed by the families living here, as evidenced by the fact that the institution is operating at maximum capacity. The representative added that more and more young couples and families are choosing the Tócóvölgy district as their home, all thanks to the rich green areas, parks, and the calm, family atmosphere.
