The Bihor – Hajdú-Bihor Euroregion Press Photo Exhibition was opened on 15th of March 2023 at the Partium House to mark the anniversary of the 1848-49 Revolution and War of Independence.
Eleven photojournalists submitted a collection of ten to ten images each to the competition preceding the exhibition. The winning photos, taken by photojournalists from Debrecen and Oradea, are on display at Partium House.
According to Deputy Mayor István Puskás, the free press is an important achievement of the 1848 events. This exhibition is also a recognition of the achievements of the present.
“We all deal a lot with the press, as it is part of our daily lives and our orientation in the world, but perhaps a little less attention is paid to photographers alongside journalism. An exhibition like this can show that without them, the modern press is unthinkable, and it can also show the high quality of this craft, and even art,” the deputy mayor said. He also spoke in his speech about how good it would have been if the events of 1848 had been photographed by the press workers of the time so that posterity would have had a more accurate picture of what happened in the Pilvax, or whether Bánk Bán was really performed then as we know it.
The event was also graced by the presence of Antonia Nica, Deputy Mayor of Oradea, who spoke of the importance of the close ties between the two cities, and also of the important work done by the tireless, often artistically skilled workers of the press who find the time and energy to bring the subject to the attention of readers – on both sides of the border.
At the event, the pictures were evaluated by the editor-in-chief of Dehir, Miklós Szénási, who stressed that although many people say they are nowadays mainly informed through social media, real press work, information, and authentic communication is powerful. Good writing, professional television and radio news and programs, and news and press photography have power.
“The press photos displayed here are all special and valuable; they show individuality and professionalism. There’s something more in all of them. Because of the choice of subject, because it is unique, special – or because it shows what we all see and care about,” the editor-in-chief of Dehir said.
The exhibition is on display until mid-April 2023 at the Partium House (Debrecen, Burgundia Street 3.).

In the framework of the competition, the jury awarded trophies, medals, and commemorative plaques. The Szathmári Pap Károly commemorative plaque was awarded to Csaba Kocsis (Berettyóújfalu, Várad), János Csíki (Hegyközpályi, Euro Foto Art), László Farkas (Nagyvárad, Denagy.hu) and Antonius Ciucur Losonczi (Nagyvárad, Bihari Napló). György Gurbán (Debrecen, Dehir.hu) was awarded the bronze medal, Károly Pap Szathmári, Camelia Bușu (Oradea, Jurnal Bihorean) was awarded the silver medal, Szilvia Mikula (Debrecen, Dehir.hu) was awarded the gold medal. The Summit Agro Romania Cup was awarded to Loránd Szilágyi (Oradea, Bihoreanul), while the Partium Cup went to Paul Lelea (Oradea, Bihoreanul). The Euro Foto Art Cup went to Annamarie Kiss (Debrecen, Hajdú-Bihari Napló). This year’s Bihar Photojournalists Cup was won by Ovi D. Pop (Oradea, Durans.ro).
