Debrecen company at the forefront of packaging technology

In 2024, Sz.Variáns Ltd. experienced a remarkable year marked by professional achievements, including the nomination of its managing owner, János Szakál, for the Ernst & Young “Businessman of the Year” award. 

The Debrecen-based family business celebrated its 30th anniversary and received multiple prestigious accolades, such as the Store Insider Award and the Hungaropack Grand Prix, awarded for innovative packaging that enhances luxury confectionery. 

Demonstrating its commitment to sustainability and advanced technology, Sz.Variáns Ltd. continues to excel in both domestic and international markets, producing tens of millions of boxes annually, with 80 percent catered to the local market and 20 percent exported to Slovakia, Romania, Austria, and Germany. In 2024, the company achieved a 23 percent increase in turnover, underscoring its success in challenging market conditions while enhancing its global presence and influence in the packaging industry.

The Hungaropack Award, Hungary’s premier annual accolade recognising innovative packaging solutions, saw the company achieve its tenth win for a premium confectionery product. The award-winning design features an exclusive box that combines traditional form with contemporary craftsmanship, including a foil window enhanced by UV lacquering, embossing, gilding, and unique graphics. This luxurious packaging not only captures the essence of late 19th-century richness but also showcases modern technological advancements, aligning with the high standards demanded by Stühmer Ltd.’s production facility. As noted by János Szakál, Managing Director of Sz.Variáns Ltd., the design harmonises respect for tradition with innovative techniques, making it a fitting presentation for Stühmer’s luxury offerings.

Sz.Variáns company begins its Christmas preparations in mid-February, establishing production plans based on customer demands. By September, they commence manufacturing popular items, such as gift wraps and branded paper bags, in order to ensure readiness for the holiday season. 

Utilising Lean process improvement systems, they maintain efficient operations. The CEO noted promising growth prospects for smaller businesses this year. Sz.Variáns Ltd. has introduced sustainable and aesthetically pleasing packaging for CRÉEM Ltd., a cosmetic manufacturer, which adheres to principles of sustainability and design quality. This packaging is made from environmentally friendly materials, including FSC-certified CRUSH GRAPE paper, containing grape seed fiber and recycled content. Their innovative approach has earned them the Store Insider award, reinforcing their significant role in the packaging technology industry.

Sz.Variáns Ltd. prioritises social responsibility and actively supports local initiatives, including the Debrecen Children’s Clinic, hospice services, and the National Blood Supply Service, with plans to assist the Down Syndrome Foundation. The company collaborates with local schools and kindergartens and aims to foster employee well-being, exemplified by their annual Santa Claus Day breakfast, where staff celebrate collective achievements.

Looking ahead, Sz.Variáns Ltd. is set to innovate with smart packaging solutions planned for its product range in 2025, striving to enhance both functionality and the customer experience while offering elegant and valuable gifts.
