From the 16th of July, certain electric scooters will be subject to compulsory insurance. These are vehicles weighing more than 25 kilograms and exceeding a design speed of 14 km/h, and vehicles weighing less than 25 kilograms but exceeding a design speed of 25 km/h. The new rule affects more than 50,000 e-scooter owners nationwide.
Electric scooters also belong to the category of so-called micro-mobility devices, such as electrically powered bicycles or skateboards.
Anyone who drives such a vehicle should check with insurance companies, as they can only be used with compulsory insurance.
“The ministerial decree that helps to place these micro-mobility devices between vehicles is still missing. So in this situation, some insurance companies have chosen to put micro-mobility devices in the category of other vehicles, and this is accompanied by very heavy premiums, “ MABISZ’s (Association of Hungarian Insurance Companies)
Head of Communications Gábor Lambert revealed.
The average annual fee is around HUF 10,000. There are also insurers who have classified micro mobility devices in the category of mopeds. In the case of e-scooters, insurance is required for vehicles weighing 25 kilograms and exceeding 14 km/h, or vehicles less than 25 kilograms but exceeding 25 km/h. By the way, the annual fees are very different, the amount of compulsory insurance can range from a few thousand HUF to several hundred thousand.
