Exhibition on the Books of Moses at MODEM

MODEM art center 1-3 Hunyadi János Street, Debrecen, Hungary

The Modem Centre for Modern and Contemporary Art invites the public to the opening of the exhibition, "Origin" on Saturday the 8th of February at 4:00 p.m. The exhibition interprets the five books of Moses through the works of contemporary Hungarian artists from the perspective of the 21st century man. It aims to draw visitors' attention not only to the well-known scenes of the Old Testament, but also to their specific interpretations and topicalities. Four years ago, the exhibition “Evangelium  21” was presented at MODEM, highlighting twelve messages from the four Gospels of the New Testament. This is what exhibition “Origin”, which deals with the foundations of Christian and Jewish culture, now reflects on. The works are part of Levente Kovács' private collection. Similar to “Evangelium 21”, this time twelve artists, who have previously dealt with religious themes, were asked to realise the exhibition. The artists created their works in collaboration with theologian József Zsengellér, so the paintings, installations, graphics, animations and photographs came together to form a coordinated artistic ensemble. The pieces of the collection, in addition to their unique message, focus on modern man in the interpretation of archaic texts. Using contemporary artistic tools, they try to find […]

Exhibition of Rarely Seen Elvis Relics Opened

Józsa Community Centre Szentgyörgyfalvi út 9, Debrecen-Józsa, Hungary

On the 8th of January, Elvis Aaron Presley, the singer, musician and actor considered the king of rock and roll, would have celebrated his 90th birthday. To mark the occasion, DEMKI Józsa Community Centre is organising an exhibition of Gábor Szilágyi's collection. The collector said he had idolized the icon, who lived only forty-two years, for nearly five decades. Ever since Gábor Szilágyi fell in love with Presley's music, he has been fanatically collecting all relics related to the singer and singing his songs. He emphasised that he wants to present the king of rock and roll to the public from a lesser-known side, and at the beginning of his fandom, the hunt for Elvis relics was particularly difficult. “When I fell in love with his music, it was still difficult to acquire anything about him, but the joy of waiting made the time spent on this worthwhile. I also want to introduce the artist and the musician at exhibitions and during my singing evenings, but I would rather have interested parties get to know Elvis as a generous, deeply feeling person,” he said. The vinyl records, CDs, posters, advertising materials and other relics acquired by Gábor Szilágyi are also […]

Puppeteer ‘s Exhibition Opens

Vojtina Puppet Theatre 13 Kálvin Square, Debrecen, Hungary

Oláh Richárd's exhibition is a visual storytelling about art, dreams, plans, made puppets, and theater. As the head of the Vojtina puppet workshop, Oláh Richárd has participated in the making of puppets for every performance in recent years. He claims that the creation of a puppet is realised by transforming the material in the puppet maker's secret workshop. Using material and imagination, he crafts the life that the actor ultimately gives life to on stage. The puppets are the results of transmutations and transformations. The artist, who will be presenting his work at the exhibition, presents the puppet universe, which can speak in many languages, through his own artistic filter. The exhibition will be opened on Monday, February 17th at 4.00 p.m. by puppeteer Péter Hajdú. Greetings will be given by artistic director Terka Láposi, with music provided by  Blattner Prize-winning artist and puppet designer Gyula Majoros.  The exhibition can be visited between February 17th and March 30th, on weekdays from 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m., and Sundays from 9.00 a.m. to 12.00 p.m. in the Kálvin Square exhibition space. modem

MODEM opens its new exciting exhibition on February 20 at 6:00 p.m. Attila Bagi, a visual artist from Debrecen living in Budapest, presents his solo exhibition in the Project Space which aims to showcase emerging artists.  The exhibition explores the tradition of still life in the context of modern consumer culture and technology, drawing from his series that reimagines the tradition and medium-specific possibilities of still life representation within the transformed object culture and technological environment of the 21st century. Key questions include whether we can see our individuality in mass-produced goods and if disposable items can serve as tools for legacy. Each piece reinterprets traditional still-life painting, pushing objects beyond the picture frame and challenging viewers to rethink genre conventions.   Date: 20 February - 15 April Location: MODEM Source: modemart.hu/en

Russian Music Festival in Debrecen

The Russian Music Festival will be held for the seventh time in three cities and five venues, under the artistic direction of pianist Marcell Szabó.  The theme of this year’s festival is “Friendships”, which will give an insight into the personal lives of great Russian composers and the sources of their inspiration. These friendships were not only human relationships, but also sources of artistic dialogue and mutual motivation. The varied program includes a distinguished line-up of artists, an evening concert, a family program and an exhibition. Rachmaninoff and Medtner mutually dedicated a piano concerto to each other. According to legend, Tchaikovsky and Saint-Saëns danced together in Moscow. At the same time, Tchaikovsky’s relationship with the Russian Five reveals the complexity of forging the musical identity of an entire nation, while the complex relationship between Stravinsky, Ravel and Debussy shows the cavalcade of the musical revolution of the early 20th century. These friendships were not only significant on a personal level but often influenced the development and evolution of universal musical styles and techniques, as music is not only a language without words, but also a bridge between different cultures and people. As in previous years, the festival is held in […]

Between Family and School : Who is responsible for raising the next generation?

Grand Hotel Aranybika Piac u. 11-15, debrecen, Hungary

MCC Debrecen Educational Center holds a lecture in English about the role of the family and the school on the 24th of March. Description: Teachers and parents share many goals. Both seek to educate, nurture and discipline children. However, this similarity hides crucial differences. Families operate in the private sphere of the home and are motivated by love for one another whereas teachers work in the public realm of the school and aim to ensure children master academic skills and gain subject knowledge. When we lose sight of these differences, tensions can arise.  Joanna Williams explores the changing roles of teachers and parents in raising children. She argues that confusion over responsibilities undermines adult authority in general, to the detriment of children, education and family life; and suggests a path towards resolution. Information about the event: The lecturer at the event will be the Founder and Director of the Cieo think tank, MCC Visiting Fellow, Joanna Williams, The presentation will be in English. The event is free to attend but registration is required. Drama “Dispossessed” with English Subtitles at Csokonai Fórum

Csokonai Fórum Csapó utca 30, Debrecen, Hungary

Csokonai Fórum will present a play by Szilárd Borbély, one of Debrecen's greatest writers and poets, with English subtitles on the 25th of March. In 2023, Szilárd Borbély would have turned 60. But 2024 is not the year of his birth, but of his death ten years ago. To commemorate this double anniversary, Bálint Botos will produce a stage adaptation of the author's first and only novel, “Dispossessed". In keeping with the atmosphere of the novel, Bálint Botos's production is primarily about the lack of freedom and the desperate search for it. In a village that fears but also gives security, that remembers but easily forgets. At once realistic and fairy-tale-like, hopeless and hopeful, cruel and sensitive. Szilárd Borbély wrote about the very down-to-earth reality of a small village in the lowlands through the story of a family in difficulty, revealing also a complex, multilayered world: the mysterious rivers that flow beneath the village and perhaps the forgotten, destitute, struggling poor of all Eastern Europe. Borbély combines the unusual and the utterly familiar, a world at once banal and extraordinary. He creates a home. A familiar, difficult home; and it echoes from the stage.   Director: Bálint Botos Duration:1 hour […]
