Fine Art Collections of Rural Museums in MODEM

MODEM Centre for Modern and Contemporary Art's exhibition “Untold Stories” seeks to show, through the art collections of museums in rural areas, the values that institutions outside Budapest acquired between 1989 and 2024. Opening in the 2nd floor exhibition space of MODEM, the selection attempts to provide a picture for professionals and the general public of how the collecting practices of rural museums have evolved in the decades following the fall of communism. About the concept of the exhibition: MODEM collaborated with over 20 rural museums to present a new exhibition, by calling for a list of approximately 50 artworks, reflecting each institution's collection focus. The exhibition offers diverse perspectives on local identity and cultural heritage, and provides a comprehensive overview of Hungarian fine art, making it a new level of collaboration. Beyond the representation of the collections, we also focus equally on the background work of collecting and the art institutions themselves, which are presented primarily with the help of infographics. New Exhibitions Open in Debrecen

The spring semester programmes continue, with 2 exhibitions opening this weekend, organised by the Cultural and Organisational Office and Culture Secretariat of the University of Debrecen. The Life Sciences Gallery will host the exhibition of Japanese ink painters, László Berényi, and Rie Shibahata.  On Saturday, April 26th at 3.00 p.m., it will be opened by Japanese ink and icon painter Éva Berényiné Szabados, with flutist Bianka Jobbágy participating. The exhibition will be open until May 22nd. Nature photographer Csilla Molnár will bring her material titled “Lővérek - The Treasure Box of the Sopron Mountains” to the Theoretical Gallery.  The exhibition will be opened by the artist himself on Sunday, April 27th at 11.00 a.m., with a welcome speech by cultural manager Viktor Csaba Kozák and  guitarist László Bakos participating.  This exhibition will also be open until May 22nd.   Date: 26 April - 22 May Location: various locations in Debrecen Source and photo credit:dehir.hu

Antigues Fair on the 27th of April

Visitors who enjoy the market ambiance and a variety of antique objects can return to the Mecca of Antiques on the 27th of April  starting at 7.00  a.m. This Sunday will be the 454th time the fair has been held. The antique fair in Debrecen welcomes buyers and sellers on the second and fourth Sunday of every month. At the fair, only objects and tools belonging to the scope of antiques and works of art can be sold.  In addition to the usual coins, medals, weapons and furniture, antique dealers also offer their not-so-old books. Porcelain tableware, paintings and family silver can also be found in the diverse and colourful offerings. The Country’s Largest Obstacle Course is Back in Debrecen

The  200 m long inflatable obstacle course will be set up again in the Great Forest area of Debrecen! The sports track is open for visitors at the following times: Opening hours: Wednesday 30 April 2025 3:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Thursday 1 May 2025 9:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. Friday 2 May 2025 9:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. Saturday 3 May 2025 9:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. Sunday 4 May 2025 9:00 a.m. - 19:00 a.m. Useful information: Participation on the sports track is only allowed with an adult escort if children are under 120 cm tall. The adult accompanying person must also pay a participation fee. The participation fee can be purchased on the spot. This is not a running race, only an obstacle course. Charity Running Race at Debrecen Zoo

Debrecen has hosted running races in factories and airports before, but nothing like what Debrecen Zoo is preparing for. On May 1st, the zoo will hold their first charity running race, titled “Run for Animals!” on the zoo grounds. The entry fees and other subsidies would be used to expand the capybara couple’s home, Diego and Mika. (Diego, the young male, arrived from the Hodenhagen Zoo in Germany in 2023, the graceful female, Mika came to Debrecen from Latvia.) Information about the charity run: Participation Fee: From HUF 3,000 per person. Since this is a charity event, if you’d like to contribute more, you’re welcome to do so! Every forint counts, and all proceeds go directly to the capybaras' habitat improvement.
