“Only” Design Fair in February

In February “Only” Design Fair awaits its visitors again, which is the perfect time to buy something really unique for the loved ones for the coming "holiday of love". In addition to familiar faces, visitors will be able to meet new exhibitors, and of course lots of handmade masterpieces, as well as take part in workshops.  Interested parties can make crochet bins, and your own upcycled shirt unique can also  be designed  Families with small children are also welcome, and the little ones can colour  and play board games throughout the fair thanks to the staff in the children's department. Musical Oliver! at the Csokonai National Theatre

We are all familiar with the tale of the impoverished orphan kid from the beloved book by Charles Dickens. Lionel Bart's fantastic production transports audiences to 19th-century London and brings the fascinating exploits of Oliver Twist to life as a musical. As viewers follow Oliver's journey from the orphanage to a gang, where young troublemakers persuade him to participate in robberies, his troubled life finally takes a turn for the better as he grows up in the turbulent world of Victorian England. Oliver eventually becomes a sensible child who finds peace in orderly conditions. Director of the musical is Tünde Tóth. Valentine’s Day Exclusive Programmes at Debrecen Zoo

On the occasion of Valentine's Day,  Debrecen Zoo welcomes couples in love and animal lovers to its special Valentine's Day exclusive programme, which offers not only unforgettable experiences, but also romantic relaxation and an unforgettable evening experience. Carnival Concert of the Kodály Choir

Churchyard Market

A farmers' market with the widest range of products in the city, the Churchyard Market opens on the third Saturday of every month at 8.00 a.m. in the courtyard of the Debrecen Great Church Congregation Centre, at 2 Leány Street. The next time it opens its doors on the 15th of February. At the market local farmers and artisans sell their products at reasonable prices in the heart of the city centre offering smoked pork products, meats, cheeses, jams, vegetables, pickles, artisan gifts and much more.  There will also be “slambuc”  traditional, a Hungarian dish made from potatoes, pasta and bacon cooked in a pot),  and a book exchange point available. Visitors can choose from hundreds of books,  any of the books can be exchanged for another book of their own or taken away for a symbolic donation. ABBA Show in Debrecen

The greatest hits of the legendary ABBA performed by one of the best revival bands in Europe will come to Debrecen. The show pays tribute to the 50th anniversary of the 1974 Eurovision win with the song Waterloo! ABBA ABBORN has been touring Europe for over 20 years and has been a huge success. A total of 70 million people have seen their show on French television. This is mainly due to their authenticity, which takes you back to the 70s. As well as a perfectly polished show, they also dazzle with their impressive musical talent. They pride themselves on their live performance, completely without electronic accompaniment, just bass and drums. Interactive, Creative Workshop at American Corner

"Lyrics Lab" is an interactive, creative workshop for translating singable song lyrics and to bring American songs to life in Hungarian. Its first kick-off meeting will held on the 19th of February. Led by Dr. István Pinczés, award-winning director, translator, and lyricist, "Lyrics Lab" explores the heart of American music through the power of language. From Bob Dylan’s poetic storytelling and the timeless charisma of Elvis to the raw energy of The Doors and Steppenwolf, participants will work with legendary songs that have shaped American culture. Through discussion and hands-on exercises, attendees will transform classic American lyrics into natural, rhythmic Hungarian versions, capturing both meaning and melody.  Whether you're a language enthusiast, a music lover, or simply curious about creative translation, this biweekly workshop series offers a unique way to engage with both the English and Hungarian language in a fun, artistic setting. Solo Exhibiton of Attila Bagi “The Still is Life”  Opens

MODEM opens its new exciting exhibition on February 20 at 6:00 p.m. Attila Bagi, a visual artist from Debrecen living in Budapest, presents his solo exhibition in the Project Space which aims to showcase emerging artists.  The exhibition explores the tradition of still life in the context of modern consumer culture and technology, drawing from his series that reimagines the tradition and medium-specific possibilities of still life representation within the transformed object culture and technological environment of the 21st century. Key questions include whether we can see our individuality in mass-produced goods and if disposable items can serve as tools for legacy. Each piece reinterprets traditional still-life painting, pushing objects beyond the picture frame and challenging viewers to rethink genre conventions.   Date: 20 February - 15 April Location: MODEM Source: modemart.hu/en

Hans Zimmer’s Soundtrack Concert

The special evening immerses the audience in the world of the most recognisable movie soundtracks, which are emotional and comprise musical masterpieces that have shaped the contemporary film industry.  In the exclusive concert in Debrecen, a symphony orchestra will play the works of the renowned composer, Hans Zimmer.  The German composer Hans Zimmer is well-known for his film scores. He is renowned for using his music to give stories more passion and emotional nuance. His best-known films include Origin, Interstellar, Dune and Gladiator, which have won the hearts of audiences worldwide. Winter Farewell Street Ball on Debrecen’s Oldest Pedestrian Street

The Chinese Lantern Festival is traditionally held in February to mark the end of the Chinese New Year, so it is around the same time as the carnival celebrated in Hungary. At the joint event of the Creative Community of Debrecen and the Confucius Institute visitors can enjoy a music-dance-singing performance of the Chinese cultural circle in an environment decorated with beautiful lanterns, learn about a traditional Chinese musical instrument, the “guzheng”, and then enjoy a light show by fire jugglers. During the colourful programme, children are invited to take part in a carnival costume contest, with prizes to be won, and at the end of the event, Aquamanó will perform at the rousing street ball. The event will close with loud shouting and banging to chase away winter, so the organisers are urging everyone not to leave their “noise-making” devices at home.
