Amateur Artist’s Exhibition in Csapókert

Graphite, pastel, watercolour and oil: Péterné Szőnyi has experimented with many different techniques. She has been interested in drawing since childhood, but it is only in recent years that she has begun to take up the art of drawing more seriously. Her favourite subjects include the expression of emotions on faces, but she is also interested in landscapes and still lifes. She is currently training through the ValdorArt Alternative Drawing and Painting School's mentoring programme. She has participated in exhibitions, but this is her first solo show. This is also a novelty at the Csapókerti Community Centre, as it is only the second exhibition to feature the works of an amateur artist. Travelling Exhibition of the Fire Department at the Kölcsey Centre

The fire department celebrates the anniversaries of 75 years of institutional firefighting training and 85 years of the Fire Department Orchestra. The exhibition of the Central Museum of Disaster Management also pays tribute to two significant anniversaries in the history of fire service. Interested parties can learn about the history of firefighter training in chronological order, while the past and present of the fire brigade band are brought to life through the personalities of the conductors. The free exhibition encourages visitors to interact by providing information through QR codes. “Musical Instrument into Hands ” at the Kölcsey Centre

The musical instruments and sound equipment that could be tried out in the program last visited the city in April 2022, having previously visited the city in 2018 and 2017. This time, the 90th "Musical Instrument into Hands" exhibition will be held at the Kölcsey Centre, where the instruments in seven sections will be on display between the 14th and the 16th of  January, on the 320th to 322nd exhibition days of the series. Guitars, bass guitars, keyboards, percussion, world music and folk instruments, as well as electronic music and studio equipment will once again be presented by experienced musicians. The exhibition will be opened by Deputy Mayor István Puskás Puskás on Tuesday, the 14th of January at 10.30 a.m., with speeches by Managing Director of Főnix Event Organiser Ltd., Zita Dobos and Director of Rocksuli Debrecen, Miklós Péter Balogh. The Best Dutch Short films to Watch also in Debrecen

Shortcutz Amsterdam, organised by the BuSho International Short Film Festival, will be held again this year, where interested parties can watch selected Dutch short films and vote for their favorite, as well as award the most popular short film with an audience award. Shortcutz Amsterdam presents the six Dutch short films nominated for the Best Short Film of the Year in an annual global tour, and this year the event will be held in Debrecen as well as Budapest. The Novel, Abigél’s World Comes to Life

A spectacular exhibition opens at the New Town Hall Gallery on Kálvint Square on the 16th of  January at 4:00 p.m. The exhibiting artists are illustrator and painter, winner of the 2024 Kölcsey Ferenc Fellowship, Alexandra Grela and visual artist, Ábel Kónya. One of the emblematic figures of Debrecen and Hungarian literary history is Magda Szabó, whose best-known novel is perhaps "Abigél", translated into several languages. In 2024, Alexandra Grela created a new cycle of images for this volume, which matches the style and approach of her literary illustrations of recent years. The technique of the works utilizes the artist's experience in the field of graphic design, while also relying on the drawing, collage and painting patterns characteristic of her earlier creative periods. The exhibition will be opened by Deputy Mayor, István Puskás with the participation of flustist, Hanna Jantyik. Italian Evening at the Debrecen Youth House

Churchyard Market on the 18th of January

A farmers' market with the widest range of products in the city, the Churchyard Market opens on the third Saturday of every month at 8.00 a.m. in the courtyard of the Debrecen Great Church Congregation Centre, at 2 Leány Street. The next time it opens its doors on the 18th of January. At the market local farmers and artisans sell their products at reasonable prices in the heart of the city centre offering smoked pork products, meats, cheeses, jams, vegetables, pickles, artisan gifts and much more.  At the first occasion of the year, visitors are invited to enjoy a traditional pig feast, and the donations received support the diaconal service. Books Fair at Böszörményi Road Campus

After the highly successful visit in October, the Alexandra Publishing Company is arriving with books at incredibly favourable prices. In the course of the publishing work, a lot of books pass through hands; some specimens inevitably suffer minor or major defects. However, the perfect exterior is not everything: the inner values are the most important, especially in the case of books. At the books fair, more than 15000 different books, not only defective but books in perfect shape, can be bought at discount prices from 100 HUF. Traditions of Lowland Weddings Come to Life

Last year, for the first time, Lóránd Heit, a folk musician and winemaker, and his friends organised a programme entitled "Honour to the Guardians of Hungarian Culture". At the time, the concert was a tradition-building event, and that the plan was to organise it year after year.  Continuing their plan, a large-scale concert, entitled "Living Traditions of Lowland Weddings", will be held again this year at the Süveg Street DEMKI Community Centre on Sunday, the 19th of January at 4:00 p.m.  The festive concert will feature the Knight of Hungarian Culture, Zsigmond Gyönyörű, the Figula Banda and the Debrecen Folk Ensemble. The main patron of the evening will be Director of Professional Development at National Institute of Culture, Erika Juhász, and the patron will be the CEO of DEMKI János Halász. Carpathian Basin Costumes Photo Exhibition

The photo exhibition, entitled Carpathian Basin Costumes, of László Holló Prize-winning photographer Márta H. Csongrády will open on the occasion of the Day of Hungarian Culture  on Monday, the 20th of January, from 5:00 p.m. Márta H. Csongrády, photographer and visual artist, graduated as a museologist and ethnographer at the Kossuth Lajos University of Sciences. For thirty-five years she worked as a research associate at the Kenézy Gyula Hospital and Clinic. She founded the Kenézy Gallery and organised the Baby Gallery at the Children's Hospital of DOTE. Since 2003 she has been the director of the Vámospércs Women's Artists' Colony and the Hortobágy International Artists' Colony. The latter is now an association. She has exhibited her works in Debrecen's Japanese sister city Toyama and in exhibitions oraóganise by Toyama in Debrecen.
