“Civic” style is shown Déri Museum

On the 8th of December, starting at 10 a.m. Déri Museum awaits visitors with colourful programs. Professional lectures, unusual fashion shows, workshops and handicrafts will show how folk craftspeople, designers and creators from Debrecen, Hajdú-Bihar county, preserve and renew the knowledge of their predecessors and how they adapt it to today's needs, aligning with the ancient treasure of forms and patterns, and how they create a new, unique "Civic" style that cannot be compared to anything else. Program: From 10 a.m.: Professional lectures Traditional decorations and tailoring methods appeared on modern garments. Ugly Sweater Charity Run

Parallel to the highly successful initiative in Budapest, the Ugly Sweater  Run is organised in Debrecen for the third time on the 9th of  December, where charity goes hand in hand with the cheerful atmosphere and the joy of movement. All participants have to do is put on their cutest, ugliest or funniest Christmas sweater, hat, scarf and bring a gift bag with them to donate. As well as promoting community sport, the charity run aims to make Christmas brighter for children and families in need.  Donations will be delivered to the families through the Debrecen Charity Board. Toys, books and sweets with a longer expiry date can be donated for children under 18. Donations can be dropped off between 10 am and 1: pm on the 9th of December at the donation point on Dezső Baltazár Square, the location of the Christmas Ugly Sweater Charity Run. Christmas Design Fair in Debrecen

The Csak Design Vásár (“Only” Design Fair)  awaits visitors again on the 9th of December in Méliusz Library. On this day, everyone, including artists, is dressed up to celebrate the holiday. Soft lights, the smell of gingerbread and soul-soothing tunes will fill the auditorium of the Méliusz Library, alongside an exclusive Christmas-inspired range of products. Christmas Folk Songs Performance at the Ugly Sweater Charity Run

Fruzsi Erdős, a folk singer and vocal teacher at the University of Debrecen, received the "Musician of the Year" award in Debrecen in 2013.  Her song in the show "DAL" in 2022 won the "Best Lyrics of the Year" award. In 2020, she was awarded the Csokonai Prize for her participation in cultural life in Debrecen. She has performed on many stages at home and abroad.  In January 2018, she wowed audiences in San Diego and Los Angeles. In addition to her own songs, she also performs her favorite folk songs at her concerts. Fruzsi Erdős will perform her Christmas show for the participants of the Ugly Sweater Charity Run. Have Lunch with the Gospel Choir from Virginia

Gospel Christmas

One of America's most active and famous gospel choirs, the Virginia State Gospel Chorale, who were finalists in the America's Got Talent competition in 2013 and regularly appeared in the live show, will visit Debrecen on their European tour on the 9th of December. The choir is visiting Hungary for the first time, and after last year's highly successful Gospel Christmas concert series, we can now fill our hearts with the warmth of evergreen gospel and Christmas songs live with their performance at the Kölcsey Center. The 25-member band is accompanied by a live band (drums, bass guitar, piano and saxophone), and on this year's tour, the world-famous soloist David Bratton, who led the Billboard Gospel charts for more than 52 weeks and was Kölcsey Center’s guest in Hungary last year, also sings with them. The choir, founded in 1971, has toured almost all of Europe. They had the opportunity to work with many celebrities. At the beginning of their career in honour of Pope John Paul II a concert was held in Central Park. Advent Concerts in the Small Reformed Church

    The Small Reformed Church will host 4 Advent concerts in December.   Advent concert of the Young Organists on the 10th of December from 6 p.m The program includes works by Franz Schubert, Zoltán Kodály, Miklós Kocsár, Morten Lauridsen, Ennio Morricone, Ferenc Farkas and Mikola Dmitrovics Leontovics.  Contributors: Anna Teodóra Dani, Ábel Jakab-Zalánffy, Bercel Előd Kotsis, Petra Petrov-Todorov, Dániel Sárosi, Napsugár Sarolt Szabó, Péter Szilágyi, Bertalan Tamás Mátyás (organ), Marietta Kovács (violin). Preparatory teacher: Dániel Sárosi. By purchasing support tickets (HUF 1,000, 1,500 and 2,000), the public can support the realisation of the events. Ort-Iki Puppet and Street Theater at the Advent Fair

The Ort-Iki Puppet and Street Theater company will present interactive attractions and a pastoral play at the Advent Fair in Debrecen. The company has been operating since 1989 and from the very beginning of the theatre's existence the members have written and directed their own plays, made their own puppets and instruments, and organised the performances. They follow the traditions of street and market puppetry and theatre, drawing their themes mostly from folk and medieval dramatic heritage. Gala performance of the Valcer Dance Studio

The evening will feature performances by members of the Valcer Dance Studio of various ages, top Latin and standard dancers, cheerleaders and show dancers. They will evoke a festive atmosphere with popular Christmas songs and the most successful choreographic performances of 2023, including the Hungarian championship-winning choreography of the stage version of "The Great Gatsby". Xaver Varnus’ Christmas Organ Concert

Xavér Varnus gives a Christmas concert on the 30th of  December in the Great Reformed Church of Debrecen. Varnus Xaver, who was awarded the Officer's and Middle Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit, has a long-standing relationship with the Great Church of Debrecen. He gave his first concert at age 15 in the ancient church. He is one of the most famous organists of our time. His YouTube channel (youtube.com/xavervarnus) has been viewed by 35 million so far, and the film of Bach's concerto, which was recorded on the grand organ of the Berlin Cathedral, has officially become the most-watched organ concerto in history with its nearly 15 million YouTube views.  In the summer, he gives concerts at his private concert hall located on the Canadian coast of the Atlantic Ocean, and every autumn and spring, he gives sold-out concerts in the world's great cathedrals and concert halls. Swing Christmas by Bálint Gájer

Bálint Gájer is preparing for another large-scale Christmas concert. He gave his first big Advent concert six years ago in front of an audience of two thousand people, when he presented his Hungarian-language LP Swing Christmas. Let it snow, White Christmas, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Last Christmas - all sound familiar to the general public, but these world hits are rarely sung in Hungarian.  In addition to new covers of Gájer Bálint's album "Swing Christmas", the festive evening will also feature new original songs. The ten-piece orchestra of the singer, complemented by a chamber string orchestra, will provide the classic American Christmas atmosphere.  His illustrious guest will be the much-loved singer-actress Andrea Malek, who has received numerous important domestic awards and recognitions.
