Béla Bartók International Choral Competition

Once again, the city will host one of the world's most prestigious musical events, the Béla Bartók International Choir Competition, organised by Jeunesses Musicales Hungary and Kodály Philharmonia Debrecen. The competition is not only a competition, but also a celebration of musical excellence, with the world's best choirs performing gems of contemporary a cappella art! This year, alongside Italian, Greek and Catalan choirs, choirs from Angola, Japan and the Philippines will each represent their country. The national choirs include the Ad Libitum Choir and the Kodály  Zoltán Youth Choir. And the winning ensemble will not only win the Grand Prix, but will also be able to delegate to one of Europe's most prestigious choral competitions, the "European Grand Prix of Choral Music". All the rounds will be open to the public in the town's public venues, and there will be accompanying events throughout the town, including folklore evenings, church performances and community sing-alongs. “Old dance, New Generation” – Performance of Hungarian National Dance Ensemble on Open-Air Stage

Folk dance inextricably intertwined generations, it knows no boundaries of geography or time. It is the transmission of knowledge that has ensured its survival in the past and is its future today. It was in this spirit that Kossuth Prize-winning choreographer and Merited Artist of the Republic of Hungary Zoltán Zsuráfszky invited seven of his exceptionally talented young colleagues to bring their innovative vision to the stage with the help of Hungary's largest professional dance company. World-famous Exhibition comes to MODEM in August

After the MOMA in New York, the Sphere in Las Vegas and the Grammy Gala, Refik Anadol, who uses artificial intelligence as a paintbrush,  will present his works at the MODEM in Debrecen. “Refik Anadol, the star creator of contemporary art and ever-changing installations generated by artificial intelligence (AI), will exhibit for the first time in Hungary. In 2023, he transformed the Sphere in Las Vegas into the world's largest AI-generated artwork, while the artist's swirling, mesmerising light show was simultaneously admired by the audience of New York's MOMA for a year, and at the end of the year Anadol made the Grammy Gala unforgettable with his spectacular stage world,” according to MODEM's press release. Exhibition of the Greek Catholic Priest Icon Exhibition Opens

The audience of Debrecen can soon meet the works of Father Miklós Zolcsák at the Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Street wine bar, Egri Borozó where his exhibition will open this week, on the 8th of August  from 6:00 p.m. The exhibition consists of older and some new icon-paintings of Mary, the Crucifixion and St Nicholas, which together define the overall sacramental image of the Church. The Greek Catholic priest considers icon painting to be a sacred art form, viewing it as a divine act to depict saints. He has painted over 530 icons and currently has an exhibition in Debrecen featuring his work. He emphasises that iconography expresses the divine in human and physical form. For over 30 years, he has pursued icon painting as an art of faith, spirituality, and professional expertise. Farmer-Expo International Agricultural and Food Exhibition

The largest and one of the oldest and most prestigious agricultural exhibitions in Hungary is held on the Campus of the Agricultural Research Institute and Farm of the University of Debrecen. Djabe Performs with World Famous British Guitarist Steve Hackett at Wine and Jazz Festival

The popular representative of the Hungarian jazz-world-progressive rock fusion genre and Steve Hackett will perform at the MOMKult in Budapest on the 8th of August, at the Richter Hall in Győr on the 9th of August, in Trencsénteplic on the 10th of August and at the Debrecen Wine and Jazz Days on the 11th of August. Djabe and Steve Hackett have released twelve albums under their joint name, eight of them on the British Cherry Red Records label. The latest was released in June this year under the title Back to Győr. The double LP and DVD release features a concert recording from last June, recorded at the Richter Hall in Győr, where the band was invited to perform again this year. A special feature of the 2024 summer tour is that Steve Hackett will be joined by another British musician, saxophonist Rob Townsend, who plays in the world-famous guitarist's band, and Djabé will be joined by Tamás Barabás on bass, Péter Kaszás on vocals and drums, Zoltán Bubenyák on keyboards and Attila Égerházi on guitar. Debrecen Flower Carnival 2024 Programmes – Updated

Flower Carnival Programmes - 2024 The 20th August is the national and state holiday of Hungary and the anniversary of the consecration of Stephen I of Hungary. In Debrecen, it is also the day of the Flower Carnival. It is a real attraction, drawing in visitors from across the country and internationally ever since it was first organised in 1966. Today the carnival is far more than just a parade of spectacular floral compositions and international artistic ensembles,  it is a week-long colourful programme of events where visitors can find the entertainment that appeals to them most. This year, more than 2000 foreign and Hungarian performers will dazzle the audience in the carnival procession accompanied by flower floats.  The audience can also tune into this year's parade via  the fascinating and enjoyable Carnival Week programmes starting on the 15th of August during which flower installations and flower sculptures will decorate the city with the Flower City, courtesy of Diehl Aviation Hungary Kft, Alföldi Nyomda Zrt, MODEM and Marianna Répáczky. Special Exhibition Opens at Pásti Street Synagogue

Rhythm will also play an important role in this exhibition, which will conclude with an open-air concert from the 15th of August at the Orthodox Synagogue in Pásti Street hosting an exhibition of Eszter Láng's works entitled “The Book of Eszter”, with a special programme of paintings, poetry and music. Deputy Mayor, István Puskás and President of Debrecen Jewish Community, Tamás Horovitz, will address the event then the exhibition will be opened by Zsolt Heller and Miklós Szénási, not in the usual way, but in the framework of the recently revived Artists' Lodge. After the opening, the hintaLOW band combining rap, hip hop and pop elements in its music, will give a full-length concert in the courtyard at which guests are awaited with a kosher “spritzer yard”. As Eszter Láng, a writer and poet, explains, the exhibition on show is largely made up of new works created this year. Joint event of “Dub Székház” (Dub Headquarters) and Budapest-based JazzaJ promises an exciting evening on the 17th of August in the inner garden of MODEM.  This summer “Fűszer Csemege” (Spice Treat) is happy to cooperate with Budapest-based JazzaJ (https://www.facebook.com/JazzzzzzzaJ) which is a music workshop launched in 2011 as a concert series, bringing together the Hungarian improvisational music scene.
