Piano Evening at the Faculty of Music of the University of Debrecen

At the event pianist Valentin Magyar will perform a work by Ludwig van Beethoven and Frédéric Chopin on Thursday,  on the 15th of February, at 7 p.m. in the Liszt Hall of the University of Debrecen's Faculty of Music. Board Games afternoon in American Corner

On the 15th of February the American Corner invites guests to play board games in English. At the event participants can practise English communication skills without even noticing. The organisers are planning to play Ticket to Ride and/or Llamageddon, but they also have dozens of other games to choose from. This event is open to all ages, so bring your kids, parents, and friends along. It's a great opportunity to meet new people, socialise, and have fun. Secrets of the Wild

A special pet exhibition is coming to Debrecen on the 24-25 February. The Secrets of the Wild exhibition is waiting for visitors with special tour guides who are happy to show young and old around. Bird feeding and walking tour in the Great Forest

Nagyerdei park Nagyerdei park 12, Debrecen, Hungary

On the 17th of  February from 10:00 a.m. all interested visitors are welcome to the Bird Park promenade, where the bird feeders on top of the two information boards will be filled during a pleasant walk. At the event participants can learn about the birdlife of the Great Forest and the most important rules of bird feeding.  Visitors can bring sunflower seeds, ‘titmouse balls’ and apples with themselves. The guided tour is led by conservation engineer  Máté Tóth who is a member of the Green Working Group. Participation is free to join. Meeting point:  in front of Pálma Restaurant. The walk is co-organised by the Debrecen Biodiversity Research Centre. 180th Birth Anniversary Commemoration of Mihály Munkácsy

The famous painter's 180th birthday anniversary will be commemorated on the 17th of February in Déri museum with the following programs: 2.00 p.m. Performance by the Alföld Quartet entitled "Munkácsy tells a story". The members of Alföld Quartet are Ágnes Ördög - violin, Mariann Szomorné Budai  - violin, Zita Jankó- viola, István Szomor - violoncello Alföld Quartet was formed in autumn 2012 in order to wildly perform the masterpieces of unfairly overshadowed chamber music. They aim to perform these pieces of music in music halls, churches, community centres of the South-East region and other parts of the country. Their work has been determined by high standard of music, proficiency, professionalism, sensitivity towards the musical and spiritual openness of their audience.Their repertoire includes important periods of music history, familiarity with secular and spiritual styles and genres, and high standard, entertaining music performances. At the next performance of the Music-Matine series on Sunday, the 18th of February, at 4 p.m., at the Liszt Hall of the University of Debrecen's Faculty of Music, they are expecting the young and the old to a special journey into the world of classical music. This fun family programme is guaranteed to bring music to life for children and adults alike. Strauss: Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks op. 28. / G. T. Holst: Planets, op. 32 Contributors: Kodály Philharmonic Orchestra / Kodály Choir Debrecen (Director: Zoltán Kocsis-Holper) George Gershwin's Overture to Cuba is the result of a two-week holiday the composer spent in Havana in February 1932 and the hugely successful premiere of the work took place on the 16th of  August, 1932 at Lewisohn Stadium in New York. Richard Strauss's magnificent symphonic poem The Merry Pranks of Till Eulenspiegel was composed in 1894-95. In this 'rags-to-riches tale', the composer depicts the adventures and frolics of a dashing folk hero, Till Eulenspiegel, in almost all the expressive possibilities of late Romanticism. Gustav Holst's 'cosmic' piece, The Planets, is little known in our country, although it is one of the most popular orchestral works in the composer's native Britain. In addition to Grieg, Ravel and Richard Strauss, Holst's style was influenced by Hindu philosophy and English folk music. “Pronoun wars” in the American Corner

The next event of the Institute of English and American Studies, The „Pronoun Wars” from a Linguistic Perspective will take place in the American Corner on the 22nd of February. The term „Pronoun Wars” apply to debates and conflicts surrounding the use of gender pronouns, especially in the English-speaking world (he/she/they/etc.) Pronouns are one of the research fields of Dr. Péter Szűcs, member of the Department of English Linguistics at the University of Debrecen, who will give a fascinating overview of the topic and the audience will also be invited  to create an informed  opinion about it.
