Fresh Debrecen Formations’ Play in the Downtown Club

With the arrival of the new year, on the second Saturday of January, two fresh formations from Debrecen will take over Desz24 (primarily an underground theatre space). Admission to the unusual indie rock and experimental art pop/rap evening is free, but there will also be a charity box on site if anyone thinks they would like to support the program or the performers. The indie rock trio Attic Attempt released their first EP last summer.  3colors is a solo project, which is mostly characterised by experimental, often noisy electronics and modern pop and rap influences mixed with surreal English and Hungarian lyrics.  The concert starts at 7.00 p.m. on Saturday in the basement of Desz24. Aquaticum SPA is waiting for guests with long experiences on these Saturdays to enjoy the outdoor pool of the Thermal Bath until 11:00 p.m. under the foliage of the Great Forest and the starry sky. In addition, the Sauna World is also open, where sauna masters are offering fantastic infusions. The Thermal Café will be open all day. Amateur Artist’s Exhibition in Csapókert

Graphite, pastel, watercolour and oil: Péterné Szőnyi has experimented with many different techniques. She has been interested in drawing since childhood, but it is only in recent years that she has begun to take up the art of drawing more seriously. Her favourite subjects include the expression of emotions on faces, but she is also interested in landscapes and still lifes. She is currently training through the ValdorArt Alternative Drawing and Painting School's mentoring programme. She has participated in exhibitions, but this is her first solo show. This is also a novelty at the Csapókerti Community Centre, as it is only the second exhibition to feature the works of an amateur artist. Travelling Exhibition of the Fire Department at the Kölcsey Centre

The fire department celebrates the anniversaries of 75 years of institutional firefighting training and 85 years of the Fire Department Orchestra. The exhibition of the Central Museum of Disaster Management also pays tribute to two significant anniversaries in the history of fire service. Interested parties can learn about the history of firefighter training in chronological order, while the past and present of the fire brigade band are brought to life through the personalities of the conductors. The free exhibition encourages visitors to interact by providing information through QR codes. “Musical Instrument into Hands ” at the Kölcsey Centre

The musical instruments and sound equipment that could be tried out in the program last visited the city in April 2022, having previously visited the city in 2018 and 2017. This time, the 90th "Musical Instrument into Hands" exhibition will be held at the Kölcsey Centre, where the instruments in seven sections will be on display between the 14th and the 16th of  January, on the 320th to 322nd exhibition days of the series. Guitars, bass guitars, keyboards, percussion, world music and folk instruments, as well as electronic music and studio equipment will once again be presented by experienced musicians. The exhibition will be opened by Deputy Mayor István Puskás Puskás on Tuesday, the 14th of January at 10.30 a.m., with speeches by Managing Director of Főnix Event Organiser Ltd., Zita Dobos and Director of Rocksuli Debrecen, Miklós Péter Balogh. The Best Dutch Short films to Watch also in Debrecen

University of Debrecen Egyetem tér 1., Debrecen, Hungary

Shortcutz Amsterdam, organised by the BuSho International Short Film Festival, will be held again this year, where interested parties can watch selected Dutch short films and vote for their favorite, as well as award the most popular short film with an audience award. Shortcutz Amsterdam presents the six Dutch short films nominated for the Best Short Film of the Year in an annual global tour, and this year the event will be held in Debrecen as well as Budapest. The Novel, Abigél’s World Comes to Life

New City Hall 11 Kálvin Square, debrecen, Hungary

A spectacular exhibition opens at the New Town Hall Gallery on Kálvint Square on the 16th of  January at 4:00 p.m. The exhibiting artists are illustrator and painter, winner of the 2024 Kölcsey Ferenc Fellowship, Alexandra Grela and visual artist, Ábel Kónya. One of the emblematic figures of Debrecen and Hungarian literary history is Magda Szabó, whose best-known novel is perhaps "Abigél", translated into several languages. In 2024, Alexandra Grela created a new cycle of images for this volume, which matches the style and approach of her literary illustrations of recent years. The technique of the works utilizes the artist's experience in the field of graphic design, while also relying on the drawing, collage and painting patterns characteristic of her earlier creative periods. The exhibition will be opened by Deputy Mayor, István Puskás with the participation of flustist, Hanna Jantyik. Italian Evening at the Debrecen Youth House

The audience is invited to Luca Balduccio's evening, where they can experience the authentic Italian way of life with Luca.  The usual great atmosphere comes in a new guise to the Great Hall of the DEMKI Youth House. This time, the background is provided also by Bence Széll, who is known for touring Italy on his bike, taking breathtaking pictures and videos. ​​The event is free to attend, but as places are limited, registration is required and can be done by following the link below. Every participant can only register themselves for the event. Churchyard Market on the 18th of January

A farmers' market with the widest range of products in the city, the Churchyard Market opens on the third Saturday of every month at 8.00 a.m. in the courtyard of the Debrecen Great Church Congregation Centre, at 2 Leány Street. The next time it opens its doors on the 18th of January. At the market local farmers and artisans sell their products at reasonable prices in the heart of the city centre offering smoked pork products, meats, cheeses, jams, vegetables, pickles, artisan gifts and much more.  At the first occasion of the year, visitors are invited to enjoy a traditional pig feast, and the donations received support the diaconal service. Electronic Dance, Rock and Underground Concerts

The inescapable figures of Hungarian electronic dance music will take turns behind the DJ booth for a whole evening at Spontán Bar on the 18th of January. Everything from deep dubstep to acid, UK garage, breakbeat and jungle can be enjoyed at this concert. The concert of Tamás Kovács Band offers a different atmosphere: this time they will play at one of their favorite places, the Incognito Club, also this Saturday. As well as on the 18th of January from 7.00 p.m Deeprecen's next event awaits the audience at Desz24. Three bands are performing there. The music of the Szeged five-piece, The Void, formed in 2006, takes visitors  to a special world. Androids Do Dream is a metal music project based on analog keyboards formed in 2021. The third band is Memorat, formed in Debrecen in 2022, which is basically closest to the post-hardcore genre. Classical Music Concert at the Reformed University Church

The National Philharmonic Orchestra will come to Debrecen on the 18th of January as part of the Philharmonia Hungary season at the Debrecen Reformed University Church. Come and be part of a truly great evening of music. This concert is also for lovers of emotions, dreams, human greatness and transcendence. Performers: National Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by György Vashegyi Programme: Mozart: Serenade in B flat major “Gran Partita” Massenet: The Virgin – The Virgin’s Last Dream Schönberg: Glorious Night About the music pieces: Mozart's Gran Partita is a large-scale serenade for wind instruments, showcasing emotion, fantasy, human grandeur, and transcendence. Known for its unique solutions and idioms, it's a bohemian, personal, and dignified concert that explores new waters and explores new musical forms. The Last Dream of the Virgin, a colorful and emotionally transcendent piece by Massenet, is performed in the second half of the concert. Originally an introduction to the Virgin Mary legend, it depicts the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and serves as a prelude to heaven. Schoenberg's Glorious Ego features strings and a poem by Richard Dehmel, depicting a passionate couple resolving issues like betrayal, childbirth, and repentance. Listening to this work may inspire forgiveness for relationship grievances. […]
