Exhibition “Institutional Fictions – The Possibility of an Art Faculty in Debrecen” in MODEM

The exhibition “Institutional Fictions – The Possibility of an Art Faculty in Debrecen” with the main focus idea of a possible art faculty in Debrecen takes visitors on a utopian journey and functions as a sort of thinking experiment. Giving young artists from Debrecen and abroad a platform to exhibit their work is one of MODEM Project Space's primary goals, but it's also crucial to make room for multidisciplinary art projects that address the city as a cultural organism. In September 2023, in cooperation between MODEM and the Department of Architecture of the University of Debrecen, Master of Architecture students took a course on the question of which area of the city and in which form the building of the Faculty of Arts could be built. One of the starting points for the project was the realisation that Hungary is a capital city-centric country in terms of cultural history. Books Fair at Böszörményi Road Campus

After the June visit,  the Alexandra Publishing Group is arriving again with books with beauty defects and books on a discount price.  In the course of the publishing work, a lot of books pass through hands; some specimens inevitably suffer minor or major defects. However, the perfect exterior is not everything, the inner values are the most important, especially in the case of books. At the book fair, not only defective books but books in perfect shape can be bought at discount prices with more than 15000 different  books available from 100 HUF. The book fair is open from 10:00 a.m. until the stock lasts,  but the latest until  5:00 p.m. Paying by card on the spot is possible. Exhibition of Debrecen-born, Munkácsy Prize-winning Painter Opens

The opening of Gabriella Nagy's exhibition “Romanticism in Order" will be held at the Bényi Gallery on Thursday the 26th of September at 6:00 p.m.  Gabriella Nagy was born in Debrecen in 1968. She has a constantly renewed, yet consistently building, characterful painting practice, marked by significant solo exhibitions, public collection acquisitions and professional awards. Her paintings are characterised by masterly brushwork, open vision and perception, and reflected visuality. She explores reality through surreal elements and classical realist representation, incorporating existential theories and personal observation. Her works create sensual spectacles, evoking private stories and exploring new forms within the traditional landscape genre. The artist studied at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts from 1991 to 1996 and has since mastered traditional oil on canvas painting techniques. She won the Strabag Painting Prize and received a Lisbon scholarship from the Budapest Gallery. Her works are in collections of Strabag, Hungarian National Gallery, Déri Museum, and private collectors. She received the Munkácsy Award in 2004. Churchyard Markets in September

Churchyard Markets await visitors again in September, where  local farmers and artisans sell their products at reasonable prices offering smoked pork products, meats, cheeses, jams, vegetables, pickles, artisan gifts and much more. Kerekestelep Market  The farmers' market in the playground of the Reformed Parish of Debrecen-Kerekestelep opens on the fourth Saturday of every month at 8.00. Leány Street Market The farmers' market in Leány Street opens on the third Saturday of every month at 8.00. At the book exchange point, visitors can choose from hundreds of books,  any of the books can be exchanged for another book of their own or taken away for a symbolic donation. 1st Alumni Festival at the University of Debrecen

The University of Debrecen will organise the Alumni Festival 2024 for the first time on the 28th of  September. The event is open to former and current students and staff of the institution, as well as their relatives or friends. The event is free of charge, but registration is required. Registration Registration for the event can be submitted via website regisztracio.unideb.hu. When filling in the registration form, it is obligatory to enter the individual alumni identification number (e.g. ALUM012345), which is assigned to alumni members who are registered as members of the DE Alumni Community on alumni.unideb.hu. The ID number can be viewed in the profile section after logging in to the website. “Thermal & Beer” at Aquaticum Debrecen SPA

The Thermal & Beer evening and night programmes, the first outdoor relaxation of autumn awaits visitors again on the 28 of September. Underground Music Concerts in Batthyány Street Cultural Space

The 22nd Deeprecen, an underground music concert series in Debrecen, supported by the Művésztér Association, awaits lovers of the underground music world with great returners and emerging talents in the Batthyány Street Cltural Space. After last year's memorable performance, Imre Fia Imre is coming back to town with a new album soon. The audience in Debrecen may also be familiar with this year's reformed band named “Karc”, and the third band performing at the concert will be the up-and-coming Inferis. More about the exact schedule and details can be found  here. Historical Exhibition Opened in Méliusz Juhász Péter Library

Méliusz Library Bem tér 19/D, Debrecen, Hungary

Exhibition titled "Brave Hajdú People, Rise Up -  anno 1848/1949" was opened in the first floor cloisters of Méliusz Juhász Péter Library. The exhibition presents the political communication of the period with the help of archival documents and press products. Among others, Lajos Kossuth's former manifesto as governor, letters of military freedom, a constitution issued by Franz Joseph I and a partial list of names of those sentenced to death in the War of Independence are on display in the framework of the exhibition. Additionally, the legacy of Dr. Samu Kardos, a former lawyer from Debrecen, preserved in the archives, invites visitors to a special journey through time with the help of contemporary flyers and wall stickers. Exhibition of Photographer Ouriel Morgensztern “Rendezvous in Vienna” Opened

The exhibition of 45 images by photographer Ouriel Morgensztern, entitled “Rendezvous in Vienna” presenting the holidays and everyday life of Viennese Jews, opened in the second floor cloisters of the Méliusz Juhász Péter Library. The opening of the exhibition, which was organised jointly by the Austrian Cultural Forum, the Institute of German Studies of the University of Debrecen and the Méliusz Library and is open free of charge until the 26th of October. Morgensztern was born in Paris, spent his childhood in the South of France, later lived in a kibbutz in Israel, then in New York, and finally settled in Vienna in the mid-2000s. A part of his family came from the territory of today's Belarus, Lithuania and Latvia, similar to Mark Rothko, considered the father of abstract expressionism. Morgensztern also dedicated a special series to Rothko's memory in another project. The artist first connected with the Jewish world through their parents' photo album, which lacked pictures of their grandparents and great-grandparents as many of his ancestors were murdered during the Holocaust.
