Tango Opera María de Buenos Aires returns to Csokonai National Theatre in December

Csokonai Fórum Csapó utca 30, Debrecen, Hungary

The performance, presented in the spring of 2024, will return to the Zoltán Latinovits Hall of the Csokonai Fórum. On two evenings in December, on the 6th and 7th, those interested can see the tango opera María de Buenos Aires by Astor Piazzolla and Horacio Ferrer. “I am María de Buenos Aires, the Maria of tango, the Maria of the slums, the Maria of the night, the Maria of fatal passion. If the people in the neighborhood asked me who I was, the women would be the first to answer, because they envy me; every macho man would fall at my feet like a mouse in a trap.” With these words, the title character appears in the enchanted tango opera, played by the Jászai Mari Award-winning actress Kinga Újhelyi. For her, this performance was a dream come true, as she sang flamenco at the beginning of her career. Astor Piazzolla’s only stage work brings the South American, or more specifically the Argentine, world of beliefs to Debrecen. The play features the fallen man, María, his hopeless lover, Payador (played by Péter Udvarhelyi), and the Devil or Satan, El Duende, played by Dani Torres. The special feature of the performance is […]

Exhibition “Sheafs are Dancing” Opened in MODEM

MODEM art center 1-3 Hunyadi János Street, Debrecen, Hungary

A centenary commemorative exhibition opened on the 7th of December at MODEM Center for Modern and Contemporary Art in Debrecen entitled “Sheafs are dancing – Égerházi Imre 100”. The renowned painter, Imre Égerházi, was born in Hajdúhadház, Hungary, on the 1st of September, 1925. He was a descendant of János Egerházi Képíró, a 17th-century fresco artist from Mezőbánd, Transylvania. In the early 1930s, as a small child, he moved with his parents to Debrecen, where he later studied at the free school of fine arts under the guidance of painter József Menyhárt. Égerházi's art was shaped by his own life, landscape, community, and personal experiences. His works are characterised by allegorical depictions of natural objects, houses, and landscapes, especially the Great Plain, Hortobágy, and Transylvania, but also by an atmosphere of sacrality, transience and contemplation. The structural order of his paintings was shaped by folk art and Art Nouveau; his colour culture (blue, grey, brown, in his late period red, ochre, sun colours, lighter textures) was influenced by post-impressionism and his artistic attitude by the painting of the Great Plain. He initiated and contributed to the creation of artist colonies (Hajdúböszörmény International Artist Colony, Hortobágy Creative Camp) and creative communities […]

New Temporary Exhibition Opens at MODEM

MODEM art center 1-3 Hunyadi János Street, Debrecen, Hungary

On the 7th of  December from 5:00 p.m., the exhibition "Learning from nature? - Botany" opens in the Centre for Modern and Contemporary Art. Debrecen has occupied a special place in the history of Hungarian botany for centuries. With the Herbarium (1578) by Péter Juhász Méliusz and the two-volume Hungarian Herbarium (1807), the basic handbook of Sámuel Diószegi and Mihály Fazekas, the city has long been considered the Hungarian centre of botany and natural sciences. MODEM's latest exhibition builds on this diverse heritage, showcasing Debrecen's unique nature collections and attractions, such as the Debrecen Reformed College Museum, the University of Debrecen Botanical Garden and the Hortobágy National Park. "Learning from nature? - Botany” exhibition is a good example of everything we love about MODEM. The artworks on display were all created for the exhibition. They are the fruit of workshops, the joint thinking of several disciplines, the exchange of experiences between artists at the beginning of their careers and experienced artists, the result of collaboration between artists from Debrecen and from far away countries. On the other hand they are connected to the history and culture of Debrecen by a thousand threads, which, I am confident, will strengthen the position […]

Exhibition of Transylvanian Photos Opens

Partium House Piac Street 81, Debrecen, Hungary

The exhibition has so far been shown in cities in Germany and Hungary, but it will be presented in Transylvania for the first time on the 12th of December in Oradea. The artist offers us the following reflections on her paintings, "In 1992 I visited Transylvania for the first time on a ten-day tour. Transylvania touched me, it went to my heart. Through these photographs I tried to show the spiritual experience that the air of Transylvania, the spirit of Transylvania, radiated to me. The pictures were taken 30 years ago, but perhaps they still say something about the humanity, faith and the endurance of the people living there." Erzsébet Farkasné Ács, born in Bátaszék, has been a photographer since childhood. She gained experience in portrait, documentary, and architectural photography. In 1979, she joined Ybl Miklós Technical College, specialising in ethnographic exploration. She exhibited Transylvanian and Holy Land photographs and published a book about architect Miklós Ybl. The exhibition titled “My Transylvania” will be opened by photographer Levente Vigh on the 11th of December at 6:00 p.m. in the Partium House. The artist will be in conversation with István Stanik. The opening will be attended by world-famous conductor János Ács […]
