AFS is one of the oldest student exchange organisations in the world. Hungary joined the world organisation in 1990, and since then thousands of Hungarian students have spent a year abroad and thousands of families have joined in. They are also present in Debrecen and have close cooperation with several institutions.
One of them is the Szoboszlói Úti Primary School, which has been actively participating in the AFS International Exchange Programme since 2016.
As the Head of the Institution, Orsolya Hajnalka Kammererné Nyéki, told Dehir, the organisation welcomes students from all over the world to study in the city’s secondary schools for a shorter or longer period of time, a month or a whole school year.
We joined the programme on the initiative of the district president of the Debrecen District, Katalin Tóthné Tímár. In May we will again host Indian students for two weeks. They will participate in school lessons and be present in the life of the host families. Last year they were part of the Day of Nations programme, together with several of their fellow students from other countries. We have also organised a class exchange programme with a Serbian class for a week.
Last Thursday in February this year, students from Japan, Italy and Chile visited their English groups.
“It has become a tradition for foreign students visiting Debrecen to give presentations about their home country and culture.”
As the Director summarised, this is a great opportunity to broaden knowledge and practice English.
