The outdated light fixtures were replaced on Wednesday with the help of a lifting basket at the intersection of Ibolya and Gyergyó streets. The work will last for a month, depending on the weather, first in the Vénkert district and then in the Újkert, on Cívis Street. Deputy Mayor and Municipal Representative for the district Lajos Barcsa said that in the coming weeks, 549 luminaires will be replaced on street lighting poles, which will result in an annual reduction of 28 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.
“These luminaires are now modern, controllable, we can control the brightness and as a result we typically get positive feedback from residents. Obviously, if there is a problematic luminaire, our colleagues investigate the complaints and we try to meet all requests,” was heard from Lajos Barcsa.
Upgrading street lighting is important not only for the environment but also for road safety. High-quality, high-brightness light bulbs also improve visibility.
“The city’s budget this year will allow the implementation of the Green Codex measures, which will benefit all Debrecen residents,” as Deputy Mayor Ákos Balázs said at the last assembly.
“We are implementing Hungary’s largest environmental protection programme, the 50 measures of the Green Codex also serve the everyday lives of the people of Debrecen, as we provide the resources for the operation of the Environmental Monitoring System, which is essential for the work of the experts,” Ákos Balázs added.
The municipality has so far replaced more than 4,600 light bulbs in the city. As a result, more than 600 average family houses are saving the equivalent of the annual electricity consumption.
