The Eastern blue-tongued lizards have already taken over their terrarium at Debrecen Zoo.
Native to Australia’s semi-deserts and bushlands, the Eastern blue-tongued lizard (Tiliqua scincoides) is commonly known for its distinctive colour and exceptionally long tongue, which it extends to defend itself from predators or other threats. This is accompanied by a hissing and puffing sound.
The Eastern blue-tongued lizard lives a cryptic lifestyle, foraging for insects, small reptiles, and plants during the day but rarely leaving its hiding places in fallen trees or among rocks. With the exception of the breeding season, the Eastern blue-tongued lizard is solitary, but males fight fiercely for females. It is an oviparous species, i.e., females hatch their eggs in their bodies and give birth to independent offspring.
The five Eastern blue-tongued lizards arrived at the zoo on the 22nd of August from the Espace Zoologique Exoticamis in France.
The newcomers have already taken up residence in their terrarium in the zoo.
