New sterile room to serve the recovery of seriously ill children in Debrecen

A new sterile room helps children recover in the paediatric haematology-oncology department of the Clinical Centre. The development was carried out with the help of a broad partnership and 40 million HUF. From the end of October, children diagnosed with high-risk leukaemia will be treated in the sterile ward. This could significantly improve their chances of recovery.

The one-bed sterile room is scheduled to be ready for use in the ward at the end of October. This will help children with aggressive, intensive illnesses to recover.

“It has an aeration system that pressurises the air, essentially filtered to sterility.  So there is no chance of outside infection for those children being at the stage of a treatment where they have a low immune system.,” Head of the Department of Paediatrics at the University of Debrecen Clinical Centre Csongor Kiss said.

Paediatric haematology here provides the highest level of care in the country. In Debrecen, around 3,800 children are treated annually in outpatient and inpatient settings.

“We receive them from all over the country and there is a high chance that not only children with cancer and leukaemia are cured, but also, for example, premature babies have the best survival rate in the country at our children’s clinic,” Vice President of the Foundation for the University of Debrecen György Balla said.

“It is a daily struggle for children, parents, nurses and doctors. A caring city must support this by creating the right infrastructure together with the university,” Deputy Mayor Diána Széles said.

The ward will be able to start treating ten children with acute leukaemia a year in this sterile room.

The University of Debrecen is building the special room with the help of several NGOs and the city, and the total budget is HUF 40 million.
