A press conference on the details was held on the 22nd of July, 2024 by MP László Pósán, and municipal representative of the area István Kovács.

Regarding the details of the investment, István Kovács spoke about the fact that Phase I of the road construction of Mészöly Géza utca began at the beginning of May and was completed in the past few days. The road was built as a dead-end street in a two-way residential-rest zone with a bench. Prior to the construction works, the public lighting network was built as part of the investment, which was carried out after the installation of energy-saving LED bulbs. In addition, a 200 m long closed rainwater drain was built in the street.

The representative added that the cost of the development was nearly HUF 130 million, which was provided by the municipality from its own resources.

István Kovács said that road construction and large-surface asphalting works are currently underway at several locations in the district. Examples include Keresztesi Street and Kárókatona Street. He emphasised that these asphalting works are investments carried out based on residents’ requests, and they serve the purpose of making traffic comfortable and safe on the roads of the Eastern part of the city as well.

MP László Pósán pointed out that just like in houses with a garden, there is always something to do on the city’s roads. This road construction also clearly shows how traffic habits have changed in the Eastern part of the city in recent years. As soon as a dirt road receives an asphalt layer, a number of technical regulations must be met, which no longer allows for safe two-way traffic. He added that changes in recent years had led to new asphalt being laid in many places on previously dirt road sections, requiring a compromise between residents and road users. In Mészöly Géza Street, this was solved by constructing the road as a dead-end street, thus allowing two-way traffic.

The MP mentioned that in many places, the unidirectional widening of streets would be a condition for road construction due to building restrictions, which in many cases will require lengthy preparation and negotiation. In this situation, a key role is played by local councillors, in this case István Kovács, who can successfully mediate and solve the problems that arise.

László Pósán also said that the current investment also shows the strength of the city, as transport development is a priority programme in the city, thanks to the fact that the city’s economy has tripled in 10 years. For this reason, compared to the previous 20 renovations per year, the city can now carry out asphalting works on nearly 60 sites, and as a result of further economic development, this number may increase even further depending on contractor capacities.
