In the second week of January, more than forty thousand people visited their GPs nationwide due to fever and muscle pain, and 200 thousand came for examination with acute respiratory infections. This year’s flu season appeared earlier than expected, and mostly manifests itself with weakness and high fever. Experts say it is still worth getting vaccinated, and anyone who has fallen ill is advised to rest thoroughly to avoid complications.
According to the National Centre for Public Health and Pharmacy, more than 43,000 people visited their GP with flu-like symptoms in the second week of January. The number of people seeking flu vaccination in this Debrecen general medical practice increased by more than 20 percent compared to last year, with the older age group being the most active.
During the epidemic period, the number of people visiting the clinic increased by almost 70 percent, and 80 percent of those who come in with respiratory illnesses are young and active workers. Those over 65 make up only the remaining 20 percent.
Flu presents with sudden weakness, muscle aches and high fever. Experts say it’s worth taking time to recover from the illness.
“We can recommend the usual: plenty of fluids, vitamin C, vitamin D and antipyretics, which work quickly. Patients think they are over the infection, they go back to the community after 2-3 days and that is the worst because they are still infected, but they are also over-infecting themselves,”, Director of the Debrecen Institute of Primary Care and Health Promotion Csaba Papp said.
Covid vaccines are again available at GPs. Unlike the flu, the coronavirus is present year-round, so anyone who is cautious can ask their doctor for the vaccine.
