At the last meeting of the Cooperation Council of the Debrecen Region in April 2023, the mayors of the member municipalities agreed to set up working groups to facilitate the exchange of experience.

On the 19th of  May 2023, working groups were set up on tourism and sport and health and social issues. Debrecen, Derecske, Hajdúnánás, Hajdúszoboszló, Hortobágy, Létavértes, Mikepércs, Nádudvar, Nyíradony, Püspökladány, Tiszafüred.

Representatives from Vámospércs lead the working group on health and social issues. Hajdúszoboszló leads the tourism and sports working group.

As Dr Gergely Kovács, Deputy Mayor of Hajdúszoboszló, said, their town is traditionally a very strong tourist destination, and they consider it very important that the tourist destination of Debrecen, Tiszafüred, Hortobágy and Hajdúszoboszló – which is also very significant in some elements – is further strengthened by exploiting synergies.

The other settlements in the region also have hidden tourist treasures which, with the professional help of the larger destinations and through cooperation, could attract more visitors than before. The sport also plays a significant role in Hajdúszoboszló, and efforts are being made to combine sport with a healthy lifestyle and tourism.  As the deputy mayor said, Hajdúszoboszló is very pleased with this initiative and is honoured to be the coordinator of this working group. With their knowledge and contacts, they will contribute to making this working group as efficient as possible and even to achieving measurable and spectacular results in the coming years.

According to Diána Széles, Deputy Mayor of Debrecen, the city has great opportunities in the coming years, and the Cooperation Council aims to ensure that the benefits of this are felt not only by Debrecen but also by the county’s other municipalities. They should feel that Debrecen can offer help that makes it worth living and working in the region and Hajdú-Bihar county.

The health and social working group, led by Vámospércs, will first help prepare for the changes that will soon be expected in primary health care. According to Diána Széles, the county’s municipalities must have a coordinated representation in this area. The choice of venue for the working groups was also an opportunity for an immediate exchange of ideas in this area, as the participants could see the school health screening activities taking place at the Debrecen Primary Care and Health Promotion Institute (Daefi) centre.  This programme is a national good practice, the experience of which can be used in the member municipalities of the Cooperation Council.

MP László Tasó also attended the inaugural meeting of the working groups. As he said, one of the outstanding tourist assets of the Debrecen region is the Gút forest, which used to be the city’s forest. He said the time has come to start a series of welfare investments in forests and lakes in forest areas, which have been neglected so far. People demand it, and forests have an enormous recreational and tourism potential that will be appreciated in the future. He believes that forests can be an essential element in the development of tourism in the Debrecen region: staying in the forest, hiking, nature walks, and hiking, and sports in the forest environment.
