On 25th of July 2023, the University of Debrecen Professors’ Club and local members of the Rotary Club were given a tour of the theatre building. The first performance will be shown in the new complex at the beginning of October.
Among other things, the tour participants got a taste of the new stage lighting and sound equipment of the Csokonai Theatre. The demonstration gave an idea of the many exciting theatrical possibilities that modern technology can offer within the walls of this historic building. As a surprise, a song was performed on stage by Kinga Újhelyi, a member of the company.
Mayor of Debrecen László Papp also tried out the stage during the tour. The mayor has followed the renovation of the Csokonai Theatre from the beginning and said that the city places great emphasis on cultural development, one of the most significant investments in recent years being the comprehensive renovation of the Csokonai Theatre. “It is with great pleasure and pride that we can say that a wonderful job has been done here, renovating a historic building that was built in 1865, that the technology of the 21st century had to be hidden in it, renewed, while preserving the historical value,” László Papp emphasised.
Most of the theatre tour participants were regular theatre-goers, so they were curious to see how the renovation was done. “It is rare to see such a miracle as we have seen today, and I hope that there will be high-quality shows for the satisfaction and entertainment of the citizens of Debrecen,” János Nagy, member of the board of the Professors’ Club of the University of Debrecen, said.
There will be no shortage of performances in the coming season; audiences can expect sixteen premieres, ranging from prose plays to dance theatre performances and operas.
The season in the renovated Csokonai Theatre is scheduled to open on the 7th of October with the premiere of the opera “La bohème” by Giacomo Puccini.
