From January 2025, the average teacher’s salary will be HUF 820,000, State Secretary for Public Education Zoltán Maruzsa spoke about the details of this at the event.  He stressed that a total of around HUF 340 billion in additional funding will be provided for the salaries of public education and vocational training staff from 1 January. Zoltán Maruzsa pointed out that performance assessment system will start in September, and a new professional development structure will be established from next year.

“Our commitment is that from 1 January, the average teacher’s salary should be at least 80 per cent of the average graduate salary. The Ministry of Finance, Ministry of National Economy forecasts an average graduate salary of HUF 1 million 25,000. This means that we should aim for an average teacher’s salary of HUF 820,000,” Maruzsa Zoltán stressed.

Mayor of Debrecen László Papp considers the wage increase important, and also called the cooperation between the local government and educational institutions exemplary. He highlighted the development of institutions and the “Move, Debrecen!” school programme. He said that all pupils in the city are treated equally, which is why pupils aged between 6 and 14 can travel free of charge wherever they live.

“Debrecen is now at a time when the extraordinary development and strengthening of the economy is focusing on knowledge, expertise and therefore education. This requires teachers with excellent professional qualities. I am proud that Debrecen is able to play an outstanding role in almost all areas of Hungarian education,” the mayor underlined.

“We are also talking about the performance assessment system that we have in front of us, and what the role of the head teacher is in the institution. This is a new legislative change, which this conference is an opportunity to prepare for,” László Türk, Director of the Debrecen School District Centre, said. 

A new teacher training system will be introduced from 2025, which will be free of charge and available online. A pilot programme will also be launched from this year.
