The details were announced at a press conference held on the 16th of July 2024 by Mayor László Papp, Member of Parliament László Pósán and the district’s municipal representative Zoltán Piros.
Mayor László Papp spoke about how the years 2023-2024 are of particular importance in the life of Debrecen in terms of transport development. He said that more road improvements had been carried out this year than ever before using own resources, mainly on sections initiated by residents. He added that these improvements were not made for the sake of the campaign, but as part of the urban development strategy, as they can improve the daily lives of people living in different parts of the city through transport improvements.
The mayor pointed out that the construction of the first section of Basahalom Street has been completed for 100 metres. The great significance of the project is that it has the strong support of the population. The next sections will require the cooperation of residents, as in many other streets in the city where the width of the road would make it difficult to develop. As an example, he mentioned the road works in the Juliatelep, where the city has undertaken to relocate the fence and utility trenches at its own expense, in return for residents contributing 1-2 metres of their own land to ensure that the road improvements are of a suitable standard. László Papp offered this opportunity to the residents.
The mayor underlined that this year Debrecen’s budget allocated HUF 4.5 billion for the construction of new roads, road renovations, road improvements in housing estates, during which work is being done, has been done or will start in the next period on 57 streets. In the case of residential streets, improvements worth HUF 226 million have been carried out in all 8 locations. The renovation of the last section of Nagyerdei Körút started a few days ago, and the first phase of Tóth Árpád Street, Fekete István Street, Bádogos Street and Bádogos köz was completed in the past few days, and work is also underway on many other sections. László Papp announced that the programme for this year would be fully implemented. In the coming years they want to keep up the same pace, thus making it clear that transport development is a central theme of Debrecen in all parts of the city.
“The Basahalom Street development clearly shows how the construction of a road section is made up of small building blocks, as several important preconditions have to be met in order to reach today’s stage. These included the need to create a protective lane on Vértesi Road and to clarify a number of construction and regulatory issues,” MP László Pósán said.
The MP also referred to the centuries-old settlement structure of the city, where the width of the streets was not designed for today’s needs. This poses many challenges for the parties involved in such developments, so the key players in the negotiations are the neighbourhood representatives, who can really do a lot to ensure that the attitude of residents is supportive. If there is this support from the residents, the municipality can more easily allocate resources for such developments, as the economic development of Debrecen provides an opportunity, as resources are much better today than ten years ago. László Pósán also congratulated Mayor László Papp and MP Zoltán Piros on the fact that with this development, it is now possible to drive on asphalted roads in all streets of the Tégláskert.
Municipal representative of the district Zoltán Piros emphasised that the works could be divided into two parts. In the first phase, apart from the less visible planning and preparation tasks, the main task is to allocate resources. This was the case for Basahalom Street, where the preparatory work took longer. As part of the process, several public forums were held to inform residents about the development. This is followed by a phase that will be visible to the public. In Basahalom Street, this started a few weeks ago, with 300 metres of utility improvements and 100 metres of asphalting, paving and pavement works over 4 metres.
Zoltán Piros said that negotiations are ongoing with the residents to work together to achieve the standard width mentioned earlier. Finally, he praised the constructive attitude of the people living in the neighbourhood and expressed his satisfaction that more and more young families are choosing the Tégláskert area as their place of residence.
