More and more hotels are being built in Debrecen to cope with the increasing number of guests.

Hotels were full in May during the European U17 football championship, but there are no rooms available in Debrecen for the U19 basketball world championship starting next week.

The city’s only five-star hotel, Hotel Divinus, will be full to capacity, with many athletes staying here, but more and more families are also being welcomed.

Business tourism is also growing in the city, with the Mercure Debrecen four-star complex built last year specifically for this purpose.

Most nights are spent in Debrecen during events such as the Campus Festival or the Flower Carnival. Hotels and private accommodation can accommodate up to 7,000 people a day.

On Darabos Street, another four-star complex of an international hotel chain, Hilton Garden Inn Debrecen, is being built.

Enikő Tóth-Megyesi, tourism director of the Debrecen Tourism Agency (Debrecen Turisztikai Ügynökség Kft), said that the number of overnight stays and guests is increasing every year. To be able to offer so many quality services all year round, they need to develop and increase the number of accommodations. The market will always decide for itself what is needed, she added.

Experience shows that domestic tourists still account for 60 per cent of the visitors to Debrecen.

The aim is to have high occupancy rates not only in high season but all year round, so local institutions offer quality programmes and services all year round.
