“The solar park at Debrecen International Airport has lived up to expectations. Since its commissioning, the 28.8 megawatt solar power plant has reduced the country’s carbon dioxide emissions by almost 61,000 tonnes,” MVM Green Generation PLC. informed DTV Hírádó’s inquiry. These values are better than previously calculated, which is due to the fact that there were more sunny hours than expected. The average amount of electricity generated by the plant in a year represents the average annual electricity consumption of more than 16,000 households.
The solar power plant located on the airport site has been feeding electricity to the public grid for over a year and a half. The 52,000 solar panels have a capacity of 28.8 megawatts. At a conference held earlier this year to mark the inauguration, Deputy Mayor Ákos Balázs emphasised the importance of building such a solar park for the future as it would make a significant contribution to reducing high energy costs.
Given what is happening in the world, achieving carbon neutrality and increasing energy independence is a priority for Debrecen.
“These are huge steps forward, and the cases that we have launched in the Future of Debrecen movement are all aimed at making Debrecen a liveable city with good air quality,” Deputy Mayor Ákos Balázs said.
Companies developing in Debrecen, including Krones and BMW, are trying to reduce their carbon footprint by building solar parks. At Krones Hungary Ltd. for example, the solar panel system supporting the operation of the production plant was handed over in May, with the addition of a geothermal system planned.
