Universal Air will launch scheduled flights to Malta and Leipzig in Germany from Debrecen from the 30th of March. The Maltese airline has announced that the flights will operate weekly on Thursdays and Sundays.Tickets can already be booked on this page.

Universal Air told Dehir.hu that when examining the Debrecen region, they came to the conclusion that there are routes served by other airlines, but there would be a need for new ones.

“The city’s economy is growing dynamically and there is a clear need for better air connections. We believe that Debrecen is ready for a greater choice and quality when it comes to air transport,”they added.

They were also asked about why they chose these two destinations. As they wrote, “Malta was a popular route from Debrecen before the coronavirus pandemic, and as an airline based in Malta, we thought it was important to rebuild this connection.”

Previously, charter flights from Leipzig arrived in Debrecen. Universal Air thought it would be worthwhile to connect the two cities with scheduled flights, which would both support inbound tourism in Germany and facilitate travel between the two regions for automotive professionals.

The launch of the Leipzig flight was also welcomed by the BMW Group Plant  Debrecen, as they wrote, “Our employees regularly commute between Leipzig and Debrecen, so the Leipzig flight makes it significantly easier for them to maintain contact and cooperate with local colleagues. But the new flight is not only useful for them: it also opens the way for economic operators and residents of the two cities to discover each other’s regions.”

Universal Air told Dehir.hu that although they only announced their new flights from Debrecen a few days ago, they are experiencing high demand, with bookings coming in continuously, so they see the initial demand as very encouraging.

They also mentioned that if the first two routes perform well, they would consider installing a base aircraft in Debrecen, which would allow them to expand their offering.

“We are already looking for additional destinations. We have identified several potential routes and are actively negotiating with the airport, the city and Visit Hungary. In order to implement these plans, we would need to station an aircraft at Debrecen International Airport,” they said.
