Accor, one of the world’s leading hotel management companies, is expanding its portfolio of renowned brands in Hungary, further strengthening its presence in the country’s eastern region.

The group will open an Ibis Styles hotel at Debrecen Airport, which will welcome its first guests in 2025, as was announced at Expo Real in Munich, one of the world’s most prestigious real estate development trade shows.

Thanks to an agreement with Xanga Group, one of the most significant investment and development groups in Eastern Hungary, Accor will open an Ibis Styles hotel in the second largest city in Hungary. The Ibis Styles under construction will be the first hotel near Debrecen International Airport, the second busiest airport in the country, close to Tégláskert.

“Debrecen is a major leisure and cultural destination in Hungary, as well as a key business and economic centre in the Eastern region, with huge economic development potential,” Dilek Sezer, Accor’s Director of Development for South East Europe, said. “It’s a unique opportunity for us to have our brand as the hallmark of the first hotel at Debrecen International Airport and, following the recent opening of Mercure Debrecen, to consolidate our presence in Debrecen, further expanding our regional network,” he added.

“Xanga has been developing turnkey industrial and logistics facilities for rental for more than two decades. We have enabled many international companies to locate their business in Debrecen. As the former operator of Debrecen International Airport, our group has always been committed to developing the area’s infrastructure. In addition to the more than 30,000 square meters of cargo, logistics and office space developed there over the past decade, we are now expanding the business environment of the airport with a new hotel, which is increasingly needed due to the city’s vibrant economic life,” István Herdon, CEO of Xanga Investment and Development Group, pointed out.

The new hotel will have 73 modern, comfortable rooms and 20 apartments on four floors.  There is also a restaurant, bar and café, and meeting facilities for business travellers.

The hotel is scheduled to open in the second half of 2025.

“The contract signed at Expo Real in Munich is another significant step forward for Debrecen,” Mayor of Debrecen László Papp. He continued by saying that construction of the three-star hotel has already started, and it will raise the service standards of the airport. He said that many airports worldwide already have this type of hotel, and one has recently opened at Liszt Ferenc Airport, and Debrecen is now catching up with Budapest.

The mayor also referred to the other announcement that Wizz Air will launch a scheduled flight to Rome from Debrecen. “The airport’s traffic will increase, and the service quality of the Debrecen International Airport will also increase, thanks to the construction of a new hotel near the airport”, he said.

In the statement, the background to the decision is that Debrecen is a well-known educational and cultural centre, the most important economic centre in the Eastern region and home to many international companies.

In recent years, Debrecen has hosted many major regional, national and international cultural, sporting and business events. The city is a driving force for economic development in the region: Since 2015, nearly 18,500 new jobs have been created, and more than €12 billion in working capital has been injected into the city, including the BMW Group’s new Industry 4.0 iFactory. The city’s development has also attracted the attention of international experts, with the Financial Times ranking Debrecen among the world’s top ten cities in its overall FDI strategy for 2021.

Debrecen International Airport is the second most important international airport in Hungary, with a dynamically growing passenger traffic. The record number of passengers was set in 2019, the last year before the Covid-19 epidemic, when 600,000 passengers visited the airport. In 2022, the number of passengers registered exceeded 250,000, with 300,000 passengers expected in 2023. Industry estimates suggest that passenger numbers could return to 2019 levels around 2025 and reach 1.5-2 million by 2030.

The Ibis Styles hotel brand is part of the Accor group, and they are renowned not only for their unique design but also for the unforgettable promise of an experience that guests appreciate. Accordingly, each hotel has a different, precisely crafted leitmotif. The brand’s hotels guarantee a positive, optimistic atmosphere in a modern environment.
