Night of Museums Held Again in Debrecen
MODEM, the Déri Museum, the Debrecen House of Literature, the Ferenc Medgyessy Memorial Exhibition, the Small and Great Reformed Churches, the Museum of the Reformed College of Debrecen, the Jewish Community of Debrecen and the Magda Szabó Memorial House all welcomed visitors with special events and activities on 20 June as part of the Night of Museums.
Despite the fact that the institutions above regularly offer sold-out events throughout the year, their shared mission for the shortest night is to draw the widest possible audience through their doors by presenting themselves and the treasures they preserve in creative and unusual ways.
In the garden of the Great Reformed Church, Reverend István Oláh fed visitors freshly grilled biblical burgers, while at MODEM, managing director Kata Vizi and actor János Mercs encouraged all to immerse themselves in the exhibitions open throughout the year and not to be afraid to find their own interpretations.
Everything that could be seen, heard or tasted in downtown Debrecen last Saturday evening reinforced the same message: the genuinely engaging performances, children’s activities, concerts, English and sign-language guided tours all demonstrated that visiting a museum is not a compulsory activity for bored pupils on a school trip, but an experience that is understandable, enjoyable and accessible to everyone.
