A new announcement is expected regarding BMW’s investment in Debrecen.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said in Munich last week that BMW’s investment would be a success story for the Hungarian economy, as the German automotive company is building a factory in Hungary that will fully combine environmental protection and competitiveness.
BMW’s investment in Debrecen will be more than previously announced; this factory will be what the industry will look like in the future. Hungary and Debrecen, together with BMW, will show the world something that will only become commonplace in the world economy in the coming decades, the Minister said.
He added that Debrecen would be home to one of the most modern factories in Europe and the world, where BMW will build its first all-electric platform.
The BMW investment was announced in the summer of 2018, creating 1,000 jobs with its Debrecen plant, which will have the capacity to produce 150,000 cars a year, and these figures are set to rise.
The minister said that the war in Ukraine and the sanctions imposed by Brussels were pushing the European economy towards a severe recession and that Hungary had no choice but to stay out of it.
He underlined that this is not an easy task, but it is possible, and there is a clear recipe for it: to maintain the pace of investment growth in Hungary, in which Bavarian companies have a major role to play.
“Investment in production creates jobs and generates economic growth If the economic growth is maintained, we will be able to stay out of the recession, and we will not have to face the negative economic consequences that we have unfortunately already seen in Europe as a result of the pandemic,” he said.
