The Kodály Philharmonic Orchestra and the Kodály Choir held a musical closing ceremony and awards ceremony. As is tradition, the centenary year was closed with a special event at Hal köz. The concert also honoured the outstanding performers of the season. In his speech, Chief Music Director of the City of Debrecen Dániel Somogyi-Tóth emphasised that celebrating the centenary is of great national importance.
The overture to Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro was also played during at Hal köz on Tuesday afternoon, the Kodály Philharmonia and the Kodály Choir held a season closing concert.
In keeping with tradition, the year’s excellence awards were also presented. Clarinetist Tibor Áchim was awarded the Rubányi Prize. He said he had many uplifting moments. “I have been a member for thirty-seven years. I started working as an assistant when I was a student and then full-time from 88-89. These 37 years flew by in seconds, as they usually say,” the orchestral artist and soloist leader said.
The director of the Kodály Choir Zoltán Kocsis-Holper said that this year they had been able to play wonderful music and had performed many high-quality concerts. “I can’t really choose which was the most memorable, because we loved all of our acapella concerts, which we could give to our audience here with a pass. We had a guest from Latvia, Jānis Ozols, but we also had the chance to work with one of the choir’s legendary conductors, Péter Erdei,” he said.
At the open-air concert, Deputy Mayor of Debrecen István Puskás also greeted the performers, emphasising that the Kodály Philharmonic has been an integral part of Debrecen’s identity for a hundred years.
And the Chief Music Director of the City of Debrecen Dániel Somogyi-Tóth said that the two indicators of a performing arts institution are the direction it is taking artistically and the number of people it reaches. “From both an artistic and a management point of view, I think we are in an excellent direction. The orchestra is celebrating its 100th anniversary with a particularly strong period, an artistic period. We’ve got a lot of young people coming in, and they’re doing a great job,” Dániel Somogyi-Tóth added.
