This year’s kindergarten enrollment ended at the beginning of May. Parents could choose which of the nursery schools in their area they would like their child to attend.
Chairman of the Education and Culture Committee of the City Assembly, Szabolcs Komolay said in the programme “Evening Close-Up” of Debrecen Television that the municipality maintains 33 kindergartens in 48 locations, and churches and foundations also run kindergartens in Debrecen.
He informed that all those who had fulfilled their enrollment obligations in accordance with the law had found a place in Debrecen kindergartens.
Szabolcs Komolay also informed that, according to the law, children over the age of three must start kindergarten by 31 August of the given year, but many children start kindergarten at the age of 2 and a half. If there are places available, this is usually accepted, and the President says that in most cases this is the case.
Many parents prefer to send their children to a nursery school near their place of work rather than in their local area, and efforts are made to meet this need. Szabolcs Komolay reported that they had been able to meet almost everyone’s request.
As stated, there will be an average of 21 children in each group, although the most popular kindergartens may have more than that, with some reaching up to 30.
Debrecen’s institutional system is prepared to cater for children with special educational needs, for example there is a special kindergarten for autistic children.
Kindergartens in Debrecen can accommodate not only children from Debrecen, but also children from the agglomeration whose parents work in Debrecen.
Szabolcs Komolay said that the quality of education in kindergartens is also very important. In recent years, 18 kindergartens have been renovated to the tune of HUF 4.8 billion and new kindergartens have been built, so there is currently enough capacity for kindergarten places.
As a result of the economic development in Debrecen, non-Hungarian children are also appearing in the kindergarten system, and the staff are trying to prepare for this, but at the same time the children are learning Hungarian very quickly.
