Traffic will be safer and faster at the intersection of Balmazújvárosi Road, Füredi Road, Csigekert Street and Szabó Lőrinc Street.
The Ministry of Construction and Transport has successfully tendered for the reconstruction of the intersections of Balmazújvárosi and Füredi roads, Csigekert and Szabó Lőrinc streets, Mayor László Papp announced on his Facebook page.
The junction has been planned for a long time, but the state postponed the project in 2022 due to the Russian-Ukrainian war and the energy crisis in its wake.
In recent years, almost a new neighbourhood has developed behind the Decathlon store, with many new houses and apartments being built in the area. Most people living there would turn from Szabó Lőrinc Street onto Füredi Road if they were heading towards the city centre, but this is often very difficult, with a hefty queue of cars at peak times. In addition, those wishing to turn are often in the way of those wishing to go straight on, so new lanes would be created at the junction.
There are 2×1 lanes from Csigekert Street to Szabó Lőrinc and Füredi streets. In the future, there will be a separate left, a separate right and a straight lane. The development of the through section of the main Highway 33 will be characterised by creating six lanes per branch.
According to the tender specification, the junction will have separate right and left turn lanes on the branches of the main highway 33. On the approach side of the main road 33 to Debrecen, in addition to the two straight lanes, a separate right-turn lane will be created for about 90 metres, and a separate left-turn lane will also be 90 metres long. On the outbound side of the main road, in addition to the two independent straight lanes, there will be a 90-metre independent left-turn lane and a 150-metre independent right-turn lane.
On Csigekert Street, which joins the junction from the south, an approximately 100-metre-long left turn lane and a 50-metre-long independent right turn lane will be added to the independent straight lane. On Szabó Lőrinc Street, which joins the junction from the north, the single straight lane will be joined by a double left-turn lane of 70 metres and a 90-metre right-turn lane. As part of the improvements, the pavement will be reinforced on sections of the main road 33 adjacent to the junction for almost half a kilometre.
In addition, the missing 120 metres of cycle path on Szabó Lőrinc Street will be constructed, including a connection to the existing cycle path on Füredi Road. A 200-metre service road will also be built to provide safe access to properties near the junction on Szabó Lőrinc Street. The contractor will also have to carry out the necessary utility replacements.
The winning companies will have one and a half years to complete the project.
According to the summary uploaded in the Public Procurement Notice, the contract was awarded to a consortium of Debreceni Mélyépítő Holding Fővállalkozó és Tanácsadó Kft. and Nyíregyháza-based KE-VÍZ 21 Építőipari Zrt. The contracting moratorium expires on 19 September, after which the parties can conclude the contract. The companies have worked for HUF 1 billion 935 million (gross).
